Recommendations for 2 big days near Vegas?
I have two days to train near Las Vegas and am looking for recommendations. S/B/R each day. Thinking either Summerlin or Henderson. I'll be in Vegas for a conference and staying through weekend.
  • Hotel? Airbnb? Ideally I wouldn't need a car and could Uber so somewhere close to pool/running.
  • Pool: Thinking Henderson Multigenerational Center, Desert Breeze, or Pavilion
  • Rides: Red Rock, Mt. Charleston, Lake Mead
  • Run: Any good soft surfaces? Routes I can't miss? I heard Hoover Dam is cool.

Thanks in advance.

Hoover Dam is cool, theres like a 10-12 mile round trip run on dirt trails through the old tunnels the construction workers used to take to get to the dam. Thats a nice run, just a bit of a drive from Vegas is all. Also decent trail running to be had in Red Rock Canyon and across the street from the conservation area as well if you park at the horse compound or whatever it is.

You can also ride Lake Mead (Hoover Dam area) on some very hilly roads or around Red Rock is a good loop. Thats also pretty hilly and I think costs like 3 dollars to enter on a bike. Its a good 13 (?) mile loop.

Only place I've swam there is in Lake Mead so cant help you much there

If you dont want to rent a car I guess id stay as close to Red Rock as possible for the running and riding, near the Red Rock Casino area.

For 2-days, which side of I-15 you are staying on will determine where you spend your time.

Staying west of I-15:
Swim: Las Vegas Municipal pool, Desert Breeze
Bike: Red Rock, Mt Charleston
Run: Trails ... google 'Cottonwood' and 'Blue diamond' (mountain bike trails)

Staying east of I-15:
Swim: Multigen, Heritage Park
Bike: Union Pacific Trail, River Mountain Loop
Run: McCullough trails (for trail running)

That being said, biking to Hoover Dam and Pat Tillman bridge is really neat. Running on the 6-Tunnel trail (the one you are mentioning) is great. This is where they filmed some of the Dirty Harry motorcycle scenes.

If you have a car, pretty easy to drive to Lake Mead (Boulder Beach), park and then get a swim, bike, run in from there. The drive to Boulder Beach from the strip is about 40-45 mins (you'll need a park pass to get in). If you are biking into the park, just stay on the River Mountain Loop and you don't need to pay entrance fee.

You can always jump on the Las Vegas Triathlon Club Facebook page to try to connect with locals.

Best,

John

Best pool is definitely Henderson Multigenerational center. Desert Breeze is good too but if you’re staying on/near the strip it’s probably marginally easier to get to Henderson, plus I highly doubt you’ll have any trouble with finding a lane - there’s often some good fast swimmers there around 11am or 12pm too.

As far as riding, you can’t beat Red Rocks. You might actually run into snow at Mt. Charleston, it looks like it got dusted last night. And as mentioned earlier there are piles of trails out there if you want some fun hilly runs.

If you don’t want to travel with your bike you can rent good road bikes at Las Vegas Cyclery or Pro Cyclery, both are on the way out to Summerlin/Red Rocks. I should say that is one benefit of Desert Breeze, you could go to the pool then keep heading west to ride/run, instead of crossing town coming from Henderson.

Feel free to PM me if you want some more info, I’m local.

What about using Lake Las Vegas as base to get to the Hoover Dam rides, area? I stayed there last November for like $60 a night at the Marriott.

I miss you "Sports Night"

Red rocks is by far the best option for cycling and running. I would not recommend riding to Hoover dam- that road is very busy

Thanks for the recommendations! I'm going to stay on the west side and explore Red Rocks.
