RESOLVED Crank Arm Repair - Tap Kit/ Tools Recommendation
Quote | Reply
Any recommendation on a tap kit to repair crank arm threads? I'd assume there is a tap out there that is not branded to be used for bikes and much cheaper. Share your wisdom below.

UPDATE: My LBS tapped this for me for $16.24; I am now back to having two pedals!

Thanks for the replies. I know I can get that Tap set on amazon, I would just need the threaded insert that threads onto the pedal and into the tapped hole. Suppose I should post in Classifieds

Yeah, you're looking for a helicoil set. This doesn't typically work on carbon cranks, buy worth a try.

You can find all the stuff you need here. "Pedal thread" taps aren't going to work for this, you need a different size entirely. As I said earlier, this typically doesn't work on carbon cranks; the threaded insert in them doesn't have enough material, and isn't designed to take this kind of load. It will pretty often just start spinning inside the crank arm when you try to tap it.
