Quarq DZero

I just saw this post by Quarq on FB. It doesn't have much detail, and I didn't see any roomers from a quick search. Anyone know anything?

Looks like we have to wait until 8/31.

Suffer Well.

I sure hope this is as underwhelming as it looks -- otherwise, it could cost me a serious amount of money.

The new SRAM Red Quarq is already 1x compatible. Seems like this may be the replacement to the Elsa as the top of the line PM for Quarq. Seems like it's about that time as the Elsa was released in late 2012 or 2013 if my memory serves me correct.

Not really sure what more it can offer though. The add says "regardless of how you ride"...whatever that means.

I'm currently looking to replace my older 975s, so I'm at least curious.

I'd be stoked if they did another trade-in upgrade promotion like they did in the past. I have an old SRAM S975 quarq that I've had on for years (and had an original CinQo before that). Even though I've been a happy quarq customer since 09 (I think) if I was going to buy a new power meter today I can't see myself going crank based again without some extra incentive given the convenience and affordability of the P1 pedals.

Dynamic Zero? What would that even mean?

Maybe it means it can calculate the zero offset without one of the two processes used currently (pedalling backwards, going through the heat unit). Basically it estimates the zero offset continuously "regardless of how you ride."

Just a guess.

Quarq have a staging site (online draft)
https://staging.quarq.com:4433/store/item/1766/

BLE
fits BB386 (which means I can finally consider those frames)
looks like they're doing an OE crank so bikes that have one can be easily upgraded to power

no details on whether dzero means anything for calibration

My (total) guess is "D Zero" stands for "zero drift" :-)

"The DZero Power Meter Spider pairs with Quarq Prime"

What's that??

Nice find!

The info indicates the BLE capability may only be for use with the Qalvin app. Taking a page from Garmin's approach of only supporting ANT+ sensor transmission while using BLE for data transfers?

Looks like SRAM will be changing their crank spider interface to the Quarq 8 bolt setup for at least some of their line in 2017.

Kind of bummed to not see continued use of the Shimano 4 bolt 110 chainring set up used on the Elsa RS. Maybe they will offer this moving forward.

BB386 compatibility is a nice addition.

They still do the loyalty program, $500 for spider only (Riken), $699, for the Riken with arms, $899 for Elsa with arms. Not sure if they'll offer something for the dzero, or if the loyalty costs for the Riken and Elsa will drop soon.

I too have a 975 that still technically works...but having issues where the unit won't wake up after 5 minutes of inactivity unless I remove the battery and put it back it. Dealing with it now, but need a replacement soon. Probably sticking crank based though as I find the swap process (for GXP) extremely easy.

That seems to be the crank that they're promoting to bike brands for OE spec. So the bike is 'primed' for a spider upgrade

Very Shrewd retailers should have a spider or 2 in stock to upgrade people on the fly.

Shrewd Specialized dealers have already been doing this with the S-Works cranks and the Quarq upgrade spider already. Now there is just a little more advertising to go along with it.

The spider looks a lot like the special FSA Gossamer used for Power2Max PMs, so perhaps you are on to something here. Maybe we're seeing an emerging PM spider standard?

Edit: Never mind. I misunderstood what you said, read the BikeRumor article Pyrhana linked, and looked at the Quarq website. I'm way off base. The P2M/Gossamer version is 6 bolts.

Perhaps these also allow the use of a solid aero chainring in the 110 BCD based upon the updated shape of the spider.

Suffer Well.

From the staging site:

DZero

● Bluetooth low energy technology and ANT+ wireless data transfer
● AxCad -- no magnet
● 10K Temperature Compensation
● Battery -- CR2032, 200 hour battery life, change without tools
● OmniCal -- swap chainrings without affecting accuracy
● 2-year warranty
● IPX7 waterproof rating
● Accuracy -- within 1.5%, measuring both legs

Elsa:

10K™ temperature compensation eliminates temperature effects on power measurement.
AxCad™ accelerometer cadence removes the need for a magnet.
An LED and visible ANT+™ ID streamline installation and operation.
OmniCal™ means you can change chainrings without affecting accuracy.
CR2032 battery – 300 hours of riding time.
ANT+™
+/- 1.5% accuracy
Exogram™ Hollow Carbon crank arms
Power Balance™
Quarq power meters have an IPX7 waterproof rating

So Bluetooth and BB386 are the biggest changes.

I don't see Power Balance on the DZero.

It looks like you lose 100 hours of riding time (although on the specs page of the DZero it says 300 hours so this may be a typo). Also the Specs page doesn't list BB386 so maybe it just isn't fully updated.

Suffer Well.
