Qualicum Beach Race - Fun times, return of a legend
Quote | Reply
the QB tri is a great little sprint race. It's where I did my first ever event and I come back in some form (limping or otherwise) every year, It's a very consistent race so a great litmus test for speed. Last year was huge with Canada150 w/300+ people. This year 1/2 that and I only recognized a handful of names. (where is everyone?)

Byron Trajan was on the start list, whom a few BC'ers will recognize. He hasn't raced for a long time. I thought heck I might be able to hang with these guys at the front then, if they are out-of-shape and have been chugging lattes, donuts and burgers like me:)

Only wishful thinking tho, the front end was in shape and ready to rock. The final heat went off ahead of schedule and I almost missed the start having ~ 60 seconds to slap the swim cap and goggle up. No swim warm-up and for the lane I was in, near disaster. It was ugly. Lane counters, confusion - got released from the pool and out of T1 in 3rd.

I did my damnedest to bike the blazes to catch a glimpse of the front but nada, Due to work/time I rode the ArgonE118 sprint bike once this year, but it was perfect in every way. Then in the run I was in a "mini-ironwar" for 3rd but seriously, after the climb into the woods I was toast. 2nd lap running on my own I felt comfortable, something I have never experienced before :O.

As for Byron, he set a modern course record time with a 18:00 5K twisting trail run.

Here's my heart rate profile off the new TomTom Spark3 - how'd I do??

Not sure what to do next. I think I might hit the gym and I have two swim races coming up early July, then August.
