Powertap P1 just stopped transmitting power
Quote | Reply
I can connect the peddles to the garmin 920 and calibrate and connect to the powertap app on the iphone. However after 2hrs of a 3hr ride yesterday they stopped transmitting power.

I have changed batteries and updated firmware but still the same problem.

has anyone else had the same problem???

same exact thing happened to me the other day. fine last season. used them outside first time a couple days ago and transmitted power for a few minutes, then all zeros for power and cadence (still connect to garmin but no reading) i had just put in new batteries too (alkaline though) i emailed PT a few days ago but havent heard back. i also can connect with rouvy, but it says N/A for battery and firmware, and gives zero values when pedaling.

Yep me too. Lots of other people too.

I am on my 3rd replacement pair now after several similar issues over the past 2,5 years. Thank goodness for their 2 year warranty. When they work, they really are great, but when they start to have issues.....not so recommendable.

Some things to try before you send them back.

Remove batteries and let the pedals sit without batteries for 30mins.

Check the firmware is properly updated in both pedals - one time I managed to update only one pedal - I thought both had fully updated, but I was mistaken - that really didn’t work well!

Use only lithium batteries - PowerTap strongly insist on this - I don’t know what difference it makes, but it was always the first question PowerTap asked when I had problems.

There were some issues with battery caps - but I assume these are now solved on recent production.

I had some issues when riding with the Bluetooth turned on on my mobile. PowerTap told me it was better to turn the Bluetooth off on the phone to avoid any issues. Many people have told me this is BS - but it is what PT told me to do and I have to say since i started to always turn the Bluetooth off on my phone I stoppped getting dropouts on the power data.

If all else fails send them back to PT!

I have seen though that there are lots of similar issues affecting the new Garmin pedals too.

This is worth trying (new caps). We've seen it fix a lot of issues. You can also try swapping your caps to see what this does.

I've had the same problem with my G3 hub. Was working fine on one ride and quit working on the next. Changed out the battery, checked for firmware update and even reset the firmware. My Garmin 1000 picks it up but I get no numbers.

It happens to every set of P1's sooner or later. The new caps, new batteries, new firmware, none of it will help. Get them on the phone and keep talking to them until they give you an RA number. I'm on my third set too.

Same here, had the pedals replaced twice within 1.5 years. Eventually sold the last replacement pair. Best decision ever, especially since dealing with the local importeur was always such a frustrating experience. Typical 1. gen product, customers as cheap beta testers.

Sounds just like my Garmin Vectors. Production quality not good at all.

thanks to you and everyone else for taking their time to share experiences. I was fortunate enough to be in the last month of the 2yr warantee so I hastily took them back to the shop and its ongoing. I am sure these will get better in the years to come. I have been on Powertap for 17 years now pretty much from the start. First gen hubs and meters where appauling but the laster hubs have been great (for me anyway)

I've had the same problem repeatedly with the 920 - yet no issues with my 520. All I can think of is the 920's little brain sometimes gets overloaded. If I didn't have the 520, I would try resetting the 920 to factory settings...I know a pain...and then trying to reconnect the P1s. This happened to me at my first Ironman race...lovely. You also may need the new battery caps...Ultimately, like others here, I swapped out my P1s under warranty for a new pair which seem a little more stable in pairing...although still wonky with the 920.

I had a similar issue where my P1 pedals wouldn't give a power reading during a ride. Based on all the reading I did online (posts like this one) I thought for sure there was a defect and I'd have to send them back to PowerTap. I suggest calling them.

I called and explained that I "knew" it wasn't a dead battery since I replaced the original battery with some Energizer Alkaline batteries and they still didn't work. They insisted that I tried lithium batteries. Why would that make a difference?! I tried it anyway, and it worked. LOL!

I'm not saying earlier versions didn't have problems, it sounds like there were some known problems for sure. I'm just saying to give them a call before you lose all hope because it's possible it's something simple. Mine have been working great since then and I'm really happy I bought these.

Good luck!

Same thing happened to me when I tried to replace battery with regular battery, only use lithium.
