Poop doping...or doping by poop...or...sigh...

So, the gut biota of Boston marathon runners is different than sedentary folks and different after the marathon vs before.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/26/well/move/could-a-gut-bacteria-supplement-make-us-run-faster.html
Transplanting the enriched components of the post-marathon gut biota into mice allowed them to improve their endurance performance. Another way to 'dope' - through the poop transplant from successful endurance athletes.

Check out the Rich Roll Podcast with Ara Katz and Raja Dhir. They kind of joke around about spas offering poop pills to make you healthier. I need to listen to it agai as a lot of stuff kind of went over my head the first time.

Pretty informative podcast. They are attempting to fix the colony collapse crisis with bees by using probiotics.

“You Are A Superorganism” June 2nd episode.

I take Sound Probiotics- you can check them out at https://www.soundprobiotics.com/. They have a sport formulation. There is lots of research coming out that you can influence your gut microbiota by taking probiotics, and there is emerging evidence that it can help with athletic performance.

Not illegal yet? I know some pros doing it. Doping should be considered anything that requires unnatural intervention (needles, fecal transplants, etc)

How does this actually work? I mean, they aren’t literally eating poop are they?

It's done one of two ways: 1) via colonoscopy or nasogastric tube or 2) stool capsules that you swallow

I go to a conference once a year that always has a talk on gut biome. The consensus seems to be that there is much we don't understand, but there are a few proven techniques like fecal transplant for C. diff or even weight loss. The consensus also is that no one has yet created an artificial supplement that has proven positive impacts on the gut biome.

when i first heard about the gut biome, 6 or 8 years ago or however long ago that was, i pretty much saw the future. designer poop. i feel that i have pretty sweet poop, so to speak. lots of things about me i don't recommend to people, but my gut spins like a top. first thing, i'd have my poop trademarked. you laugh now. but what's to keep someone from replicating my proven biome in a lab? so, first you protect your intellectual property. then you place it on the market. just, don't expect a liberal return policy from me.

Remember . . . there's nothing more organic than E.coli.

So there's that going for it.

The real question is...how many minutes.

I know how much a new bike costs, or a better helmet or an aero suit.
But how many minutes if I buy some sh*t off the internet.
And who's performance sh*t should I buy.
Can I trust cheap China sh*t.
And will I get the real sh*t.
aaaah sh......!

So my friend and teammate is a professor studying it right now. He was just at Western states with an athlete who is participating in his study. Research has shown that the gut biota is related to immune function, and general health. More recently, this was published- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/29782463/

Additionally: http://www.runnersworld.com/...toms-in-marathoners/

Research is just getting started with this. Will there be a definitive answer? Probably not. But in the era of marginal gains, this is something worth pursuing if you are struggling with gut issues.

There's already a market for hookworm harvested from fecal processing. People take them to calm down over-active immune systems. There's an excellent NMP radiolab episode about this from a few years ago.

So the human centipede was not an evil torture method but actually a sophisticated system of refining gut biom through multiple systems. We need labs full of ex pros turned into human centipedes!

in US it’s only legal for patients with C diff. But there is a doctor in Tampa who works around that by selling you the poop which he’s tested for infectious stuff and sells you instructions on how to self-administer it. It’s not rockets science. They just make a poop milkshake and you put it in your butt. People are doing it at home.

So, this will become part of the biological passport? Poop profiling? What about for AGers? Honey, I know that I told you that I won my AG in the xyz tri, but my poop profile was abnormal... How would the UCI know if an athlete's poop profile was deranged due to training or feeding or manipulation... Ugh. Just...ugh.

You're 100 years late to the party, actually. Google "Mutaflor": a German doctor by the name of Alfred Nissle isolated E. coli bacteria from the gut of a WWI soldier who was remarkably resistant against diarrhea in the trenches, registered the trademark "Mutaflor" and henceforth sold these bacteria as probiotics. They're still being marketed today. So in a way, when you take Mutaflor, you're eating part of the shit of a soldier who's probably been dead for around 100 years now...

I don’t know how they would know. If a certain microbiome is naturally occurring then detecting it wouldn’t mean much. And it sounds like the evidence is anecdotal. I actually researched the fecal transplant a bit for other health issues but there’s just not a ton of research on it’s longer term benefit.

I would think the best thing to target would be ability to process calories and fluid during long distance triathlons. Mike Pigg could have used that.

Test for feces in the blood maybe (I wonder if Lance would have tested positive, he was definitely full of shit)? They could check for foreign bacteria in the gut, but who wants to get randomized for the post-race colonoscopy? Hell I might intentionally tank on the podium to dodge that bullet... (although after some races you're 3/4 the way there, with the ass pisses(aka the pizzazz, so to speak...)

Like anything, the science is too young on things like fecal transplants or poop pills to be able to answer long term effect questions...
