Perhaps the dumbest question ever asked...

... but I'll ask it anyway. Here goes:

One of the joys of turning 50 is that most-special of all tests - the colonoscopy. Mine is scheduled for next week. This is my first one. i've read all the instructions but I"m sure I have no real sense for what is about to ensue. I'm trying to figure out how many days of training I'll miss. Obviously test day is out of the question for training. What about the day before? I'm supposed to be on a clear liquids diet from the moment I wake up, which means I can drink all the Gatorade I want but can't eat anything. Is it ridiculous to try to get in a bike ride in the morning and then just be on a clear liquids diet the rest of the day? Note that I don't have to start drinking the "prep" stuff until that evening. What about the day after the test? Paperwork says I'm OK to resume "normal activity". What's everyone's experience on energy level and ability to resume training after this wonderful procedure? Just trying to figure out how much I need to massage the training plan for next week to move the quality WO's away from these days.

I am 35 and had my first colonoscopy last year. Like any procedure I am sure it can be different for everyone. My experience was I biked easy about a half hour the day before. The day before is the worst because of the laxatives and clear liquid diet. I just did 30 minutes easy on the bike to keep my personal streak going. Morning of procedure, an easy 15 on bike to keep a streak going. The other hardest part is being so hungry from the clear liquid diet.

The procedure itself is nothing to worry about. The scariest part for me was the !@#$ing IV before putting me to sleep. When I woke up, I didn't even know the procedure was done. They made me lay on my side until I farted. That took about 2 minutes. Maybe 45 minutes sitting around for recovery from the anesthesia then my wife drove me home. We timed it to pick up two pizzas on the way home. I ate 6 slices in the 3 mile stretch between the pizza shop and our house.

That was pretty much it. I was back biking the next day and running later in the week.

Again, different for everyone but my experience was pretty easy.

Don't sweat it and ask doc what you are allowed to do the days after.

Not ridiculous at all, enjoy the bike the day before. I recommend a trainer close to a bathroom!

When I had mine done, they started me on the prep (Gatorade/Miralax mixture) 24 hours before the procedure ,so that was noon the day before. After a few hours, I didn't want to be any farther than about 30 seconds from the bathroom, so even a trainer ride would've been out of the question. As for recovery, it was the anesthesia that got me. I don't even remember waking up and getting driven home. They put me under, and the next thing I remembered was waking up on my couch that evening. I was starving but good to go the next morning...

I was only out day of for mine. I ran and biked both the day before and the day after.

I'm 52, probably should get one but I've got shitty insurance and a $7000 deductible so I'll take my chance. It would be nice if health insurance rewarded you for NOT using your insurance

I biked day before, day of and day after and mine was the good ol' double dip(both ends). wasn't biking long at the time as it was only 4 months since having my heart sliced open( I did take 2 weeks to get on trainer after that one) :)

You could exercise the day before (prior to starting the prep), but just keep in mind that you may get very hungry that night. So, you probably should keep any session short.

How quickly you bounce back after the procedure depends, among other things, on the sedative. A cocktail of Versed and Fentanyl can leave you wiped out (pun intended) for a long time. By contrast, Propofol wears off quickly.

Uneventful. I may have run that day, maybe not, I don't remember. It really wasn't a big deal.

After watching a bunch of comedic bits on it, the prep was anticlimactic. I've had worse evenings from stomach bugs.

All in all, meh, not a big deal.

Why doesn't your doctor have you do a Cologuard type of test at home?

I have a family history of colon cancer, and a colonoscopy is the "gold standard" test. From what I understand, tests like Cologuard can yield false positives.

Specialist here (anaesthetist) and someone who has been on the receiving end of colonoscopies as well.
The bowel prep is pretty intense, the day before your procedure and before you start your prep you can pretty much train as per usual. I would probably advise against anything too long and that will result in significant dehydration, as the prep can lead to some pretty significant dehydration and electrolyte disturbances.
Once you start the bowel prep you won't be able to train, trust me, it hits pretty quickly and hits you hard. Be close to a bathroom. Have somewhere private to clear things out..!!
The procedure itself, presuming you will be under the care of an anaesthetist as well, is pretty straightforward with sedation. They do fill your colon up with a lot of gas so you can feel a bit bloated afterwards and pass a lot of gas!
In terms of the day after, I would not plan on doing anything super hard and you may find you still need to be close to a bathroom (I did, things can still transit through your gut pretty quickly). Have some flexibility in terms of what training you might want to do.
All the best for it and don't be too stressed about it, the bowel prep is probably the worst part of the entire process!!

Don't forget that you don't have to be put under for a colonoscopy.

Yes, the plan is for sedation but not general anesthesia.

You don't have to be sedated either.

I'm not sure you understand the topic, and that's being kind.
Perhaps consider keeping your "thoughts" to yourself on occasion....

I had colon cancer at 32, I'm 42 now. I've had so, so many colonoscopies. One more punch on my card and the next one is free (not really)

Training the day of the procedure is no problem at all. The actual procedure is nothing. You're asleep the whole time and you wake up with no memory of it. Eat something and get back to it. No biggie.

The prep is different. They say start the prep in the evening but unless you want to be up all night start mid afternoon. Start eating light a few days before. Skip training on prep day. You'll be starving and you'll have a terrible session anyways.

Heed this warning:Get some diaper rash cream and apply between every evacuation starting with the first one. Use it before you need it.

Well you don't have to be....but I darn well know I want to be! Suffice to say, make sure if you are getting sedation it is done by someone who knows what they are doing.....
