You only ever grow as a human being if you are outside of your comfort zone. (Cerutty, as cited in O’Regan et al., 2008)

Work does things. Hard things take time to do. Impossible things take a little longer. (as cited in Myers, 1977, p. 172

Wow. Such a treat to hear his voice again and see his mannerisms. He turned me from a HS runner who got a "pity" varsity letter into a 2:32:30 marathoner and a fairly successful HS coach for a short period.

I was fortunate enough to meet Arthur and spent a week with him two years in a row in Dallas at his running camps. He was gracious and we wrote each other. I learned from the way he helped others. He spoke well of Percy as a coach who made people think.

He treated everyone with respect. There was a line to ask him questions and talk to him during a break. There were many AGers over 60 in line when Francie Larrieu arrived to see him. He knew Francie yet she waited in line like everyone else. Both Arthur and Francie showed a lot of respect for others that day.

Another highlight was when he had Peter Snell come for a talk too. Peter looked every bit a champion years later.

Arthur was a large part of the running boom back in the 70s & 80s. It was a period with the most US runners under 2:20 and hasn't happened since. Everyone was running distance and many built their training on his foundation. And we enjoyed it!

You were very lucky to meet him.
There is quite a bit on the internet on Arthur but much less on Percy so I appreciate you posting your link. The background about Percy's life but also the philosophical analysis of what he did was illuminating.
With all the gadgets and analysis we have now there is a temptation to emphasise results and science with perhaps a little less attention to experience and personal growth. Good coaches such as Arthur and Percy remind us you can do both.
