Pad Width = Rhomboid Strain?
Hey Slowtwitch,

I’ve been having some trouble with my upper back this year, which aligns with reducing my pad width 2cm from 245mm to 225m. Never symptomatic on the bike, but I’m suspicious the cockpit change may be the cause.

Anyone with an opinion or experience relevant to my theory? Could narrower pads aggravate the rhomboid?

Scott

Hi Scott — Maybe. I ride with my pads pretty wide for this reason. My whole upper back tenses up when I try to support myself on narrow pads. I started a thread a while ago asking for tips on stretches to loosen this to get more narrow, but haven’t yet tried making the pads more narrow.

I too get Rhomboid pain on one side. I have tried adjusting the length and tilt of my tri bars to fix it. I will try making the bars wider to see if that fixes it.

I’m guessing moving your pads may or may not be the culprit. You’re describing referred neck pain. See a PT and get that treated.
