Palt is just killing it, turning over at about 80-85 str/min, with 3:51.8 for 1st 400 m. Going 14:33 with abso no one anywhere even close to him is extremely impressive. Thanks for posting, did not know they were back racing in Europe. :)

No worries. He went 7:40 in the 800 on the previous day. He was interviewed in english after the 1500 and said he has a new coach (about 2 months in so far). His 1400 split is faster than Sun Yang. The last 100 for Palt is 56 vs 53.5 for Sun Yang. Palt is qualified in the 10k for the Olympics too.

I just love his race cap. "GREG" :)

He's probably due for the WR soon. He was under it at Rio until he hit the wall HARD in the last ~50. I thought he'd have done it by now since he was in such great form at the time, but looks like he's back on track.

Sun Yang had a better finishing kick by wide margain on the last 100/50. Palt needs to be faster over the first 1400 by 2.5 - 3 seconds and he will break the WR. He doesn't have the speed to drop a 26 on the last 50m.

I'm very happy for Greg. He has been strongly criticized in Italy for changing coach (from Morini to Antonelli) and in particular to go with an open water's coach. Now he can train both in sea and pool while before it was not possible with Morini.
Greg said he really wants to go for the 10k open water in Tokyo together with the 800 and 1500 and he felt he needed to train for open water as well. He said he is now happier than ever with his training.
In the interview he said he didn't know the splits so he felt he was fast but not so fast and half jokingly he said if he knew he would have gone for the 14:31.....

Watched the video and kudos to him. Hope he breaks Sun Yang's record, because then perhaps the cloud that hangs over the record will lift.

I had a thought while watching and went back and looked at Sun Yang versus Paltrineri.

Yang took about thirty strokes per fifty compared to Paltrineri's 40 strokes, so he's a definite hard worker.
Quite honestly if he (Paltrineri) posted a stand alone video on here the people would be all over him for his stroke.

Seems to me most top flight swimmers break a few rules (Ledecky anyone). Curious as to anyone else's take.

This was an amazing swim by Paltrineri. Can't wait to see him in next year's Olympics.

You're spot on wrt his stroke...the one thing that I saw was that his right arm significantly crosses underneath his body. My masters coaches have always told me I do the same thing and tried to correct it. I think I might show them this video :-). If it's good enough for a European record, it can't be too bad for an old washed up swimmer like me.

His left and and right arm almost look to be doing different things. One has elbow lift the other seems to just come around. That is just noticing things above the water. No arguing with his stroke given his speed. Works for him

What a great swim, and as about as well paced as he could have hoped for. He has the classic catch up style, and a kind of OW lunge on one side. But I think we can put to rest that a pretty stroke does not mean necessarily faster. One place it looks like he crushes Yang is on the walls. He has a really strong push off it appears, where sun would just kind of limp off. Of course that probably has a lot to do with their respective sizes, and long vs shorter muscles. It all just came together for him on the day, hope he can do it again with someone actually pushing him on the biggest stage..
