Oregon 70.3 WC Slots
I'm curious how many people saw the "Offering slots to Ironman World Championship 70.3" on the Oregon 70.3 website and assumed it was for 2022 and not for Finland 2023?

After emailing Ironman they confirmed they are "As of right now" for 2023 and pointed me to the Finland WC site that notes the qualifying races. When I pushed them they said they could change it anytime, even the day of the race.

I can't be the only one who assumed this was for the 2022 right? I'm baffled why Oregon wouldn't' be a qualifier for a race that is 3+ months later and a drivable distance vs a race that is more than a year later and on another continent.

July 1 is typically the cutoff for 70.3 WC. like you said, since it's fairly close (time & geography wise) maybe they are considering swapping depending on feedback or how the 70.3 slots get filled up from other races leading up to July 10th in Oregon

Might be an unpopular opinion but I think 3 months is a short timeframe to perform your best a 2 70.3's. I would much rather take a Finland slot at Oregon & have a year to look forward to that race & plan out a proper race schedule. I think more transparency would be nice. I'm racing Oregon, have a St. George slot, & assumed it would qualify for this year. So now I'm happy but I can understand how others are frustrated. & I don't like the idea that they can still go back and forth with it. I'm guessing last year was somewhat of an anomaly because of COVID where a lot of late season races qualified you. If July 1 was the previous cutoff date, it makes sense to go back to that. Just gotta make it clear so people can choose their races with that info if that's something they're considering.

Understood. I agree about the transparency. I don't understand the lack of clarity or the waffling on their part. A number of people I know just assumed it was for Oregon.

I personally don't need more than 6-8 weeks to get ready for a 70.3, but that's just me. To me a year+ is further out than I'm even interested in planning my season. It being June at and all, that's basically two race seasons away. But that's just my situation.

Is it just me or did they change the cutoff date at some point? Could've sworn some mid or late July races were qualifiers for St. George. Wonder if they misjudged the slots available at some point.

It’s just you :-)
The slots for the 2022 and 2023 have been posted since at least October, and have not changed. Due to injury, I asked a week ago if there were any North American races after 6/26 with 2022 WC slots. The answer was, sorry, NO. There are a couple races 7/3 in Europe, but that is it.

Well...two days ago they sent me an email saying that, at this time, Salem is for 2023. Not...they are 2023 for sure but at this time.

I don't know that it won't change to be honest. But we will see.
