Olaf's comeback
October - you have testicular cancer
November-Jan - treatment
May - 7th place at IM Brasil with a long section of the bike, ridden with bars completely loose
June - 5th place at Quelle Challenge Roth with a great run
August - 3rd place at IM Korea in really tough conditions

3 down, 2 to go! Pretty nice comeback...

Two to go? He's racing Kona and ...?

Way to go Olaf!

Well, hey... he's a couple of ounces lighter ;-)

Seriously, that's fantastic. I hope we see him on the top of the podium soon.

That's an awesome comeback! Wow still 2 to go this year, yikes, guess that'll mean a win in the final race eh;)

tell him to stop running down my homeboy Tim Marr though, Tim was 4th behind Olaf at Korea.

that's what he just emailed me:

...it was unbelievably hot. I like the heat as you know, but this was life threatening... good that I took it easy for swim and bike so I had some left overs for the worst run ever...!
train happy!

Did that 3rd qualify him for Kona?
If so, did he just choose to skip it?
Is Kona still using the 7m rule for the bike? I hope not.

That's a pretty serious comeback...sounds like he's going to be better than ever

I think they said it was over 90º at 9 am with about 90% humidity. Winning time by Raynard Tissink was about 9:30. Seems like the conditions slowed the pros by about an hour or more.

Pretty soon, if Olaf follows in Lance's footsteps, there will be some of the Bozo's out there trying to figure out how to get that diagnosis. Or to, at least, fake it so they can get the treatments. Congratulations to Olaf.

I'm not sure I know any guys who'd fancy going through that...but I guess it's similar to marrying the wrong chick :)

Studies have shown that many serious athletes would take a drug, even if they knew it would kill them in 10 years or so, if it would guarantee them a big win like the TDF or Kona, or the Superbowl. Some people are crazy.

I've heard about that but I'm not sure it applies to your you-know-whats...mind you, steroids mess with those if I remember correctly...

Hey Francois, thanks for posting this great story. It was an honour to meet Olaf last year and it is great to see a return to form like that!

Olaf has been my hero ever since I met him at a training camp way back in 2005. I remember when Francois first told me about his diagnosis. I emailed the guy and he replied saying "Hey, don't worry about me - it's just cancer. How's your training coming along? How have you been?".

Olaf is one of the best people in the sport, bar none.

Dude, I'm not even supposed to be on my bike at all right now - much less pull a stunt like that again...

Maybe next year. :)
