October Swim Boasts.. ummm, I mean Posts

Welcome to October.
For me, the Tiki Swim was my last big race of the season and for the most part, my tri season was a bit disappointing, but my swim races were pretty good and I capped it off nicely with a first place Tiki. This is my birthday month, so I have to plan something around 57. Perhaps 57 100s@1:30 alternating free and IM? That's what I did last year. Maybe something different this year.. ideas?

This morning's swim:
5x(200s/100k)
10x50 alt fr@:50/bk@1:00/br@1:00
100 cool

2100 sc yardages

I would definitely recommend the tiki swim if you can fit it in your schedule. Well put on event and you get to enjoy the oceanside festival at the same time. My tiki now has a place of honor among my gaggle of awards.

Was very sore today, an hour+ of wetsuit swimming without any ow training, well that is just careless. Today was a long easy slog through some 3k tt training.

14x300(5swim@4;30/ 5pull@4;15/ 2 IM kick@6;00/ 1 swim/1 back)

10 x 50: Odd @ 1:00, 25 dolphin kick, 25 kick
Even @ :50, alternating free and back
10 x 100: 6 with snorkel; 4 @ 1:25, 2 @ 1:20; 4 swim, 2 @ 1:20, 2 @ 1:15
10 x 75 "Idiot IM's" @ 1:15/1:20
fly-fly-fly, fly-fly-ba, fly-ba-ba, ba, ba, ba, etc by 75
10 x 25 @ :35, Odd under water, Even fly swim

It's not really an October happening, but I'm still pretty proud of this.

During taper week before Augusta, I did a 1:02 100 meter free from a push. And no, I didn't leave early. Haven't gone that fast in years.

Not bad for a still-too-fat-about-to-be-46-year-old.

Oh hell yeah, you should be proud. That's a fine result. And, BTW, swimming might be the only sport where you can be fat and still be fast.

So, lets play the "help me estimate my yardage game"

The Tiki swim inspired an open water swim of my own. Double looped out and back course. Mapmyride tool has the distance at .7mi exactly (per leg), so .7x4=(2.8mi)x(1760yd/mi)= 4928yds. (plus a couple hundred wu/wd). Buoys are clearly visible on satellite view, and appear to be in the correct place.

Caveats:
But, the last three bouys are ~450yds apart, so sighting was hard and the shortest line was definitely not taken. Sun was also directly in my eyes on way back. I did all out efforts on the last two legs of the swim (13:50 w/current, 14:10 against, with a wetsuit).

Built in mapping error? Sun/off course factorization, what do you think I can use?

I am itching to round each leg up to .75, what do ya think?

ps. sheltered bay, no chop, totally glassy.

I'm going to focus on swimming this month and see what happens. Try to swim 5 days/week.

Today was 2 loops of the bay (lots of chop and current) and then gave up and went to the pool.

2x750 (bay)
2x500 (pool)
for 2500m.

Hard to say. I wouldn't count on any open water swim, shy of nationals and world championships to be accurate. But if you fudge your course distance because of conditions, what will you do next time when the conditions are more favorable? I think I'd just fix the distance and use that regardless of conditions. It's the same on the bike - some days you may have wind at your back, some day it may be in your face. You don't change the distance because of that, you just note the conditions when you record your time.

This AM swim:
500s no time
5x100 various kicks
500s 6:00 even (I guess I am fatigued a bit, I pushed this fairly hard)
100k
4x100@1:30 1:07/:07/:09/:07
200 s/k/cool
2200 sc yardages

got in the water early when I just had the tide to contend with and Man Oh Man was that sweet. i'm still scared of teh cudda and Those Who Will Not Be Named but I got out before the dive boat and got 2 loops of the bay in. My (old injury) shoulder is telling me to increase slowly and I really concentrated (or tried to when I wasn't looking for landmarks, the reef, the boats or Those Who Will Not Be Named) on high elbows.

2x750 loops = 1500 m

start of swim loop

end is on other side of cat.

I don't know if I could swim in those conditions! I'd probably just lay on a float sipping a fru-fru drink, you know, one of those with a little paper umbrella in it.

Well, yesterday was white caps and my shoulder are still sore from 2 loops, so there you go. Once the afternoon winds start up it gets messy out there. :) considering there is a dive shop and restaurant right behind the picture, you probably WOULD be drinking a fru-fru drink, brought to you at the end of each loop. :)

My two swims in a day equal, in distance, your one swim. It just gets too hot to run mid-day and I want to do something. And, there's still that 3000tt looming.

This AM:
1000s 12:46
100k
10x50@:45 :35 ~ :31
100k
100IM 1:13
200 s/k cool

2000 sc yardages

I think some football players are fat and fast!

8 mi run, 20 min stairstepper, 2800 yds. Swim didn't feel all that great.

4 x 125 last 25 k
4 x 125 middle 25 drill
4 x 125 s
10 x 100 on 1:40
3 x 100 k/dr/50s c/d

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

Awesome beach pics.

Don't worry about the "distance". Just estimate it based on pace and water conditions. The consistentcy of OWS is where I have had success.

The thought of swimming a 25 scy pool is not very appealing to me now. The last pool swim was in early August. I swim OW 3-5 times a week. ALthough this year am only at 235k yards y-t-d, probably 50% of that is OW.

Had my best tri swimming this year. Always out near the front. Granted the races where relatively small but front is front and there are always some decent swimmer/triathletes in these events. Last race last weekend at Mead, had the cap and goggles in hand at 23:55. Then backed it up with a solid b/r and so set my course PB.

Going faster in the swim with less energy cost is what has seemed to have happened. And if it gets choppy, the greater my advantage.

Tried out the wetsuit today to make sure everything was good to go for a race this weekend. It's my "skinny" suit, so good to see it still fits.

1500 (ish, lost track and may have added or dropped a 50 or two), 20:00ish
200 kick
500 w/ paddles, 5:50
200 float
2400 scy
