Oceanside - that hill at mile 30
I think that I burnt too many matches on that hill mashing in 39x25. I did not want to bring a 11x28 but I think it was a mistake. Had trouble putting out power in the last 20 miles, and the back was sore the rest of the way. Which cassette did you ride yesterday?

I had a 39-28 and it was the best I've ridden that hill.

I usually have a 34 x 27 for Oceanside because those hills are surely not to be underestimated.

I run a triple. People laugh at me but I sit and spin past them.

I ran a 36/28. According to Strava I pushed 330W for 3:51(7mph) to get over that first hill. I’m 173lbs.

I did 2:46 on the bike, my avg power was 208W. My NP was 230W. Yes, I know.. I suck.

According to BBS with that power I should’ve ridden a 2:41, so I guess my aeroness needs to be worked on.

I also mashed it in 39x25, but my shifting was stuck and I couldn't get into the 25 at all during the race :-/! I had to stand a lot more than normal yesterday and I'm w/ you, the final 20 miles were really tough after that. I ordered an 11x30 last night in prep of St. George!

Instead of focusing on the one hill, what was your overall time?

That hill was all of 3 minutes no matter what gear you used

36/32, heart rate stayed under 160. Not sure about power output, can’t get file to upload.

Why were you opposed to to the 11-28? If you're averaging 161 watts I don't see any reason for you to be using a standard crank and tight range cassette. Mid compact or compact and 11-28 would probably be great for you unless you always ride in flat places.

I had a 52/36 11-23 and I didnt have any issues getting up. A couple of the guys I passed on the way up looked like they all shifted way too late and were mashing at like 45rpm.

It's been a long time since I did Oceanside but I've done it before. That hill was awful. Also... I am a proud 5th Marines alum and I can tell you that even our cars used to struggle up that hill. I was riding through the base saying "please done make me do San Mateo Hill" even though I knew there was only one way through and I cracked and walked it.

It's been years since I've done it. Aside from the hill at the end the section through San Mateo was my favorite part of the bike. It was awesome because I lived there. I saw my old familer barracks, chow hall, the flag where colors was raised every day. That's an awesome part of the race.

I still lapped everyone on the couch!

I was targeting 190w avg. NP came in pretty close at 187w. Do you still think that a mid-compact or compact would have helped?

Did you ride your planned watts up the hill?

I think that hill was so short that even if you'd gone a few over, you'd have been fine.

I was running 52/36 - 11/25 and spun up it in 36/23. Don't have a PM, but kept my HR from spiking.

The Marines MADE that race for me and made my day. I loved every minute of it. (they said they call San Mateo Mt. Mofo? the long form? :) ) Thank you for your service.

I know I shouldn't, but I just have to ... as a very slow, very fat chick who did Oceanside on THIS bike (3 usable gears ... no, not rings, GEARS) and passed a few pretty people walking pretty bikes up that hill ... I just gotta say ... byotches, PLEASE. ;)
