I am not sure I should help a Unix geek :) I think you need software, I don't know of anyway to get in without a password or software, although there may be. What OS is she running? If you can wait until tomorrow I can look at work and tell you the name of the utility we use. Let me know if you still need it

how about linux geek (as if it was different...)

ok: solution is easy, hit F10 for recovery and it kills previous passwords.

edit: just to be more precise, when you reboot, stop the normal reboot by hitting F10 for recovery mode, then, there is no pwd left...appaling...

It's that easy to get around the password? What sort of security is that? It's worse that I thought.

Frightening. And here I was all ready to post a primer on how to use a Tom's Rootboot disk to grab the SAM file, and then hash it with l0pht or some other such cracker.

There's another ant - quick, gimme the sledge!

yep, I thought of doing this too, but then I wondered if rebooting/recovery would work...scary ain't it?

btw, I haven't had time yet to answer your email, but have put something together for you. will likely send it this week end (was busy grading finals etc...and training!)

its a unix boot disk (read the FAQ it helps a lot). This is what I use when the dumb asses I support change the root password on the Nt/2000/XP machines and then either get laid off or quit.
