November Fish: The Sixth Annual Fish Workout Thread

I really do think we're at 6 years of this because it started when I was an undergrad.
My morning:

run: 7.5 mi (58 min)

swim: 2300 yds

500 w/u

4 x 100 on 1:45 middle 50 drill

4 x 50 on :50

4 x 100 on 1:30

4 x 150 on 2:10

200 c/d

That particular ladder is my favorite set... only had time for half of it.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

I decided to give a push at short distances and see where I am. I think I'll do this at the beginning of each month.
Couldn't be happier with the results:

500 swim w/u
100 kick
5x100@1:20 1:01/:03/:01/:01/:59 (first time in, like, forever sub 1 minute!)
400 various kicks
200 in 2:03 (best yet!)
100 kick
4x50@1:00 fr/br/bk/fl :29/:34/:35/:31
200 swim/kick cool

2200 sc yardages

4500 LCM with the masters group this am. Some sets were:

600 on 9:30 (8:50)
3x200 on 3:15 D 1-3 (3:00, 2:55, 2:51)
600 (8:58 - was supposed to be faster than the first one. Couldn't do it.)

9x100 pull + paddles D 1-3 on 1:30 (1:22s, 1:18-1:20, 1:16-1:18)

4x150 kick w/ fins :10-:20 rest. Odds: at least 50 dolphin; Evens: mid 50 build. (this one was supposed to be 6x150, but was running out of time and opted for a 200 cool down instead)

Some ITU guys training in Flagstaff right now for this weekend's World Cup in Columbia. An Irish guy, Dane, and Canuck. They were in the next lane over doing the 600's on 8:30 and 200's on 3:00. Need to get on their level...

You're gonna half to change your screen name to 3/4 speed! You are tearing it up.

A late night yesterday for me but I decided to do part of the Masters workout today anyhow. Brendan Hansen came in midway through the workout although he didn't start swimming until after I left unfortunately. I hope he can win gold in London.

Warmup: 8 x 150, odds 100 free/50 IM, evens 100 IM/50 free (skipped last 50 free)

Main:
2 x (4 x 50 free, 50 no free) on 0:40
100 easy
2 x (4 x 50 no free, 50 free) on 0:40 w/fins (did the first 4 backstroke and the second 4 kick w/board)
100 easy
10 x 25 fly/50 free on 1:15 (avg~0:59)
100 easy
skipped last round

3200 scy

150 on 1:45
100 on 1:15
50 on 40
1:00 easy/rest

200 cd

When I first saw this on my calendar I laughed. I seriously doubted I could make the intervals.
I made it through 2 cycles, barely making the 150 and 175 intervals. After that I missed each 150 or 175 by 5 sec or so, closer to 10 sec by 4th cycle.

200 w/u
50 kick
8x50 on 1:00
100 kick
8x50 drill
100 kick
4x50 on 1:00
50 kick
2x100 c/d relax and maintain stroke
50 kick

1750 total. And the good news, for me anyway, is that this is actually a rare US scm pool, so I don't feel quite so bad about the times as I did a week ago! And I haven't done an open turn except for drills and kicks since I got back in the pool a few weeks ago. That is a minor victory.

Yes, keeping the intervals very short in order to maintain form right now. I wanted 2000 today but fell apart on the last 100 and knew I was done.

Very nice challenge set of 5x100's there steve, think you might be ready for a sub 5;30 500? And i know how hard it is to do those times solo in the lane, it has been no fun at all these past months swimming alone. Good for you;

Todays SCM swim;

Well if the water temp drops to something reasonable, I might give the 500 a shot. I did ZackC's 200/800 test this AM in hot water - 2:10/9:44 (I actually did 900 in 10:57, and then figured 800 time from that).
200swim + 100 kick w/u
200 swim 2:10
1 min RI
900 swim 10:57
5x100 various kicks
100 cool

2000 sc yardages

Two things coming up: I get my new bike today - picking it up at lunch, so swimming will drop off as I begin my love affair with the bike. Also, I'm donating blood tomorrow, so it'll take a while to recover from that.
I do like what ZackC and Tigerchik are saying that November is a good month for working on top speed. That was my plan all along after the heavy October swim session. What do you think?

Mind if I join in?

Wednesday, 11/2, 5:32am

1800 total yards.

200 w/u

Reverse ladder: 500-400-300-200-100

100 c/d

Have to squeeze my swims in between 5:30am and my commute. I've asked my Y several times to open the pool at 5am--nuttin' yet. I'll stay on it.

We did a tough session at UT today (always tough there)....

30x75 was the main part of the main set, sets of 5 with 4 hard, 1 easy. Legs were a bit toast from my hard Tempo run late last night.

Glad to be back in the pool though.

Cheers,
