The recent garmin outage has me examining my need for a strava subscription and that has got me thinking about zwift. I like it but could train with something less entertaining in order to save some cash. Are there any “free” apps available to use with my kickr core ?

Well if you want to go really basic you can always use the Wahoo app or even control it with your Garmin

not free but 1 time fee for PerPro also Golden Cheetah (free) has the ability to control most trainers.
Goldencheetah has gotten better over the years and I'd say give it a try since it's free. PerfPro is a great option as well especially for the one-time fee.
