When I started out in tri, I used my Crank Bros. eggbeater pedals for years. They are crazy light and worked great. The bonus was you could actually pop right back in after having to walk through dirt and mud to take a whiz in the bushes on a training ride. I noticed some of my riding buddies were sometimes trying to clip in for several minutes.

I read they finally stopped making RXS's this year. I was on them until I exploded one last month -- it was old and had been through a few crashes so bound to happen I guess. I owned, I think, four sets. After the failure I switched to the current XPro's, and they're almost exactly the same so all good.

.. the first clip on pedals came out when I was teenager and rode clips nailed at leather soles .. but those first clip on pedals were not thought through .. as far as I remember the story was the developer founded his own company (ore contracted with another) to finish his ideas to take care about the time on a road bike .. since then I share his ideas ..

I only have experience with spd in tris, but have to agree - whats not to like with a mtb set up?

mtb pedals
- small
- light
- easy entry
- single sided road versions available for weenies, but its great having a spare side to clip in
- cheap light durable cleats

mtb shoes
- light carbon versions
- never awkward running or walking
- dont need to prepare reaching down to exit foot during the ride then balancing foot on shoe while pedalling - cos you can run in them
- low profile cleat so natural relaxed running - no cramps
- great grip no skidding on plastic cleats
- solid dismount
- ensured no sticks stones or glass or splinters in foot
- no injury from running bare foot after a foot numbing 5 or 6 hour ride - no grazes, blisters, bruises or cuts
- clean feet for the run when there is wet grass or mud
- the toe has good grip for pushing off to start anywhere when your seat is high

I say bring back the Time Titan Mag’s from the 90’s.....

Yup. LOVED my original time equipe pedals. The ones with LeMond on the box, got'em at Nashbar's store in Ohio around 1990....
