New DK name

Thoughts on the new name? Unbound Gravel.

I am personally not a huge fan, only because a race of that title could happen anywhere. Also I was not sure there was really a problem with the old name.
I was for Landrun becoming the Mid South. But to me, people are going to call the race DK for a while.

Any race where you have to pay a bunch of money but have to bring your own support crew sucks anyways.

What *was* the problem with the old name?

A political one or a legal one?

At first I was like, “yeah right how is that racist” so I googled Kanza.

You’re right! Name of a Native American tribe. Learned something new today.

New name still sucks but at least it’s a change.

yeah, the only thing I would say, is the tribe said all along they did not have an issue with the name. And, the fact that they wanted no part in the renaming efforts tell me they probably meant it.
I would have like to see something with Kansas in the name.

Not quite.

In fact, according to reporting by Bicycling, a few months before he met with Williams, Cummins was forwarded an email on November 9, 2018, “signed by 45 members of the Kaw Nation, along with academics, advocates, and allies” saying that “the name was offensive to many people in or associated with the Kaw Nation,” James Stout wrote for Bicycling.

In addition to what rrheisler said, there's also an official statement from the Kaw Nation on the DK website:

Kaw Nation wrote:

Myself and members of the Kaw Nation Tribal Council appreciated the time your team took to come meet with us concerning the rebranding of the DK race.
As was stated, in recent months the voice of the people concerning the name of the race has been a topic of discussion, especially among our elders. We respectfully asked that the name be changed to dissolve the connection to our people, the Kanza.
We appreciate your thoughtfulness and consideration as we all move forward to enhance our understanding of each other, our history and our future.

Fair point.
Though the Kaw nation appears to include ~3500 people, so 45 would be a be a bit above 1%. Just saying it did not seem like an overwhelming outcry a year ago.

Yet here you are, not in that 1% - or 100% for that matter - with your analysis.

Yes, this. Or the Flint Hills. With the milquetoast name they picked, it makes it too easy to pick up and move the race elsewhere. Or, a has been ventured, change all the races to this and then it will be easy to add more races under the Life Time umbrella.

Unbound Kansas/Flint Hills
Unbound Big Sugar/Bentonville
Unbound Leadville
Unbound blah blah

I mean in 2020 the term “racism” is thrown around carelessly and has been watered down to mean very little. So when there’s actual racism (which we should ALL work to end) it doesn’t hit us like it should. That’s What WTF???? I meant

Yep after 12 Ultraman/Ultra520K style events I am still a sucker for doing races where your crew is a huge part of the weekend.I am however, smart enough to do all my Multi-Irons without a crew because those are just boring as batshit for crews and I wouldn't inflict that on anyone. :-)

The cost of Ultraman for what you get in return... is one of the biggest money grabs in triathlon.

It is also the biggest money pit loss for any race director in the tri world.
