Just received an email from Ironman with a link to new course maps. http://vnews.ironmanlive.com/vnews/997108968

My bad. Slowtwitch seems to have slowed way down and I had an itchy button finger. ;-)

Didn't they just move the T1 off the pier and into the parking lot behind the King Kam? And then put T2 there too, instead of a mile down the road at the old airport?

Ok, that sounds about right. Luckily, I have a room at the King Kam. :-)

Looking closely at the map, the bike now goes up and down Kuakini Hwy, rather than just up Kuakini to the Queen K.

Now that will make for a lot of fun at the Palani-Kuakini corner!

That's a significant and huge change.

The pier was maxed out for space. Around the one hour mark, the men's change tent was like running into a rugby scrum - total chaos. The back parking lot should have much more room for everyone.

It also gives the race one focal spot with T1 and T2 both in the same area. Seperate transition zones always present logistocal challenges for both athletes and race managment. This will be easier for everyone.

Kudos to the WTC and the folks running IMH for making these minor, but significant changes.

One major problem I see with the course change is that in order to get to the beach, you need to swim through a narrow channel through a reef beside the pier. This channel cannot handle more than 4-5 swimmers abreast depending on the tide.

Yes, that channel coming in to the beach in front of King Kam is narrow and can be very, very shallow. Hopefully lane lines or ropes will be put up on the sides to keep swimmers away from the rocks on the sides of the channel.
