Needing new shoes is overwhelming me
The choices, varied specs, sizing differences between brands and prices has my head hurting.

I've only owned two cheap pairs in my life. I will use for training and racing.

Mostly worried about sizing and comfort and being able to return if I buy them online.

Any thoughts on this process would be most appreciated. I'm looking to spend around $200, but willing to go up a little bit. Seems silly to spend $350+ on a pair of shoes.

I think I have it narrowed down to two pairs, so if anyone loves or hates either of these, please let me know.

Honestly, spend what you need to spend to get good shoes. They will last for years if you take care of them. My road bike shoes are at a point where they need replacing - after about 7 years of lots and lots of miles. My MTB shoes don't last quite as long. But 5 years is reasonable.

Here is a way to try shopping if you are trying them on: Just try them on. Do NOT ask price. Go with the size and try on everything you can. let your feet tell you which set to get. Then ask the price. If it is too much, then you adjust. I have had cheaper shoes fit better than others.

I've had shoes feel great when they were on my feet, while I was sitting, but after an hour on the bike cause me pains.

Make sure you consider the mfr return policy. Both Specialized and Trek/Bontrager offer a 30 day moneyback guarantee.

Add Giro Imperial to your list. Twin boas and weigh around 200g. I mean really how can you beat that?

Have you looked at Fizik cycling shoes?

Any particular color that you want?

Found a solid sale on Fizik Aria 3 and Infinito 1 (although a bit pricey still) in my size.

Do they run true to size?

Also, what is unidirectional carbon?

Both are nice shoes; it really comes down to which fits your foot the best. My best fitting shoes are some $99 LGs that I TT in; they even have a nylon sole (the pro-level carbon ones had an arch that pressed on my foot).

Good shoes are worth spending for, I have a pair of Sidi Ergo Carbons that are still my daily training shoe. Bought them in 2008. Don't buy more expensive shoes just because, but if they fit you better don't skimp.

PS: Sticki Rubber is just Scott's name for the rubber heel and toe pads.

I purchased the Torch 3.0 this summer and they've been great. No issues

I would look at Sidi and see if they fit. They have spendy ones, but you can often find Genius model for around $200. I have a pair that are 10yrs and a pair of MTB Dragons that are going on 8 years. They're expensive and aren't the latest in whiz-bang weight-weenieism...but they are comfy and last a long long time.

Some of the SIDI shoes you can replace the sole. I so wanted to be able to wear them. Just about everything is replaceable.

What have you owned previously, what did you like and what did you not like about them? Is there a particular feature or property of a shoe that you're looking for?

They fit like a glove. The carbon sole is stiff and has excellent energy transfer. I never have sore feet or any discomfort.

How much did you pay for your Giro Imperials - you really like them?

We've had awesome luck with Lake. Great carbon sole, superior materials in the upper. Depending on your foot shape they offer a couple of different fits, and some in wide. Find a shop and try a few different pair or brands on. Online shopping is asking for trouble, as sizes vary so much, even within the same brand.
