Nationals & Worlds

Anyone else feel like USA Triathlon uses the national and world qualifications as marketing spam? I do, here's why:

1) I am a decent triathlete but I am not, by any measure, a national-level talent and yet I've qualified for USA nationals pretty easily.

2) USA Triathlon sends out 'Congrats! You've qualified for nationals!' to anyone who has done a sprint triathlon. I know this because last year I received the same email at 2 different email addresses. It stated that 'Based on your finish at NJ State Triathlon, you have been accepted to Nationals!' Upon closer examination, I read the fine print that stated there is nothing you have to do to qualify, you just have to sign up. So, anyone whose email they have qualified.

3) They brand you as a USA athlete representing the USA at Worlds, and you are on 'Team USA'. It feels like a total sham with half the triathlon world walking around talking about 'I qualified for worlds at [insert random duathlon race distances here]'. If USA were to ever put together, I can guarantee you those athletes wouldn't be on the team.

Finally, on topic but not USA Triathlon, earlier this year someone I know Did a 4:50 half ironman and qualified for world championships in South Africa. Turns out that he came in 22nd place in his age group, but that 21 people ahead of him were told that they had to pay a non-refundable, $450 registration fee ON THE SPOT or they would just move onto the next person in that age group. And on top of that, it would require you to travel to South Africa (this past year), which can be a LONG trip for some.

All this to say, I feel like our sport is getting a bit diluted with commercialism; USA Triathlon and Ironman are brands more than anything.

I got the same email and had the same feeling. 3rd place AG in a local tri qualifies you for Olympic distance Nationals???? Hmmmmmm sure, ok.

This isn’t new. Nationals has always been easy to qualify for. Worlds for Olympic is not easy to qualify for and no matter how fast your are, Olympic worlds is a reality check. All the other “worlds” are easy to qualify for. That said going to worlds is a blast and if you’re hung up on thinking it’s a marketing scam you’ll really miss having a great experience and meeting some life long friends from around the world.

Ok I'll throw it back at you. What standards do you want them to have for nationals? Time standard? Placement at "regional champs"?

3rd AG should only qualify you for Olympic Nats if your AG was 30 or more people. If so, why wouldn’t that be legit?

Olympic Worlds is tough. I think Sprint Worlds, while not Olympic, can be very challenging depending on location.

As for the 70.3 thing, what are you gonna do? Every location will be a hard sell for some country. Probably more Americans than South Africans at Chattanooga and more balanced this year/

I would take sprint races out of qualification for Olympic nationals. It’ll never happen but I think that would solve a lot of the “easiness” of the qualification process.

My next question. Is there an issue if “too many” people qualify? Is is causing bike pack issues?

IE are we solving something that isn’t really an issue to begin with?

ETA: I just looked, the olympic doesn't even have 3k people so even if it's "easy" to qualify, it's not really that many people taking advantage of the easy qualification process.

Sprint had ~1600. So I think if we're suggesting only have 1k people race to make it a "proper" championship event, they RD would likely rather say thanks but no thanks with a likely losing endevaour when they have to bid for this event.

There were bike packs at olympic distance nationals this year. On the highway i literally had to go two lanes over to get around a group. IMO there were way too many people on that course,

That is the roll-down process for both IM70.3 and IM Hawaii Worlds at every race WTC long course race. If you don't go to the roll-down ceremony you are out. If you don't pay on the spot you are out. And if you don't give a fuxk, then just stay out.

The age group qualifying processes for IM, IM70.3 and ITU world championships are pretty much the same today as they were 10+ years ago. So why does a guy who apparently races for the most expensive wheel manufacturer think the sport is diluted with commercialism when nothing has changed? If you don't like what's on TV, change the channel or turn it off.

Actually, for 3rd to qualify, there would only need to be 21 finishers in the AG. USAT rounds the fraction to the next whole number.

It is actually 21 people being in the AG would allow 3rd to qualify. USAT uses a very generous rounding. Which I think is fine.

The really easy races to qualify at are the regional championships or special races where the the top 7 or the top 33%, which ever is larger, qualify. That is super easy to qualify. But I think complaining about it is silly. It really is a personal thing, if you are challenged to qualify and then qualify, congratulations on meeting that challenge. If qualifying is easy, then stop complaining unless you are winning nationals.

That is referring to the nats sprint distance - you don't have to qualify for sprint nats, only oly (standards are as mentioned in other responses)

Good point(s). Then maybe my issue is with everyone who goes around telling others they're on Team USA, and a world class athlete, etc.

Members want National Championships, and USAT needs to make money. So why not put 2k on the race course?
