Music to motivate
I'm putting together a CD of music that I love to listen to before training and racing. Tired of changing CDs so I'm finally gonna burn my own hits. Throw me suggestions. Some of my favs are Silent Lucidity by Queensryche (gets me focused) and Sad but True by Metallica (gets me pumped).

Aloha

Too much time on my hands.........in taper mode.

The standard stuff while going hard on the Computrainer: Metallica, Static X, Godsmack, Rammstein. It is amazing how much of an effect the music has on your performance. Loud, angry music does mangle your hearing though.

All you need is side one of the MC5's "Kick out the Jams" and a little volume. The intro alone is priceless motivation.

Oh, Oh, try this.... Get your favorite training CD and a heart rate monitor. Practice some active relaxation while wearing the heart rate monitor (neurophysiological autoregulation)only. Calmy watch your heart rate drop. Now, put on the head phones- don't move- and crank the music. Wow! look at that! You heart rate totally goes up. that's cool. Add Prodigy to my list too.

"Lunatic Fringe" by Red Ryder rocks (but that may be only because I've seen Vision Quest about a hundred times). Alice In Chains, Tool, Sponge, The Toadies, Mustard Plug, Ned's Atomic Dustbin...pretty much anything with a pretty quick, driving pulse.

I don't have quite the hard-edged taste that y'all seem to have, but here's a small sample of some of the stuff I put on my mixed CDs:

"Bullet the Blue Sky" - U2
"I Got Drunk" - Uncle Tupelo
"You Wreck Me" - Tom Petty
"Heartspark Dollarsign" - Everclear
"Drank Like a River" - Whiskeytown
Anything by Green Day
Anything by The Ramones

(I save the Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash for my post-workout cooldown!)

If I'm trying to get really pumped up energetic, I go for some Blink 182 (Duderanch CD), Garbage (Version 2.0), Sum 41, and some Ja Rule.

If I want to get relaxed because I'm tood amn nervous (Like at regionals when there's over 300 guys running in the same race) I'll throw on some WallFlowers or Eagles.

Pick up the album "Pornografitti" by Extreme. They are MUCH harder than their trademark song "More than Words." You could pick just about any song off that album and it will get you jazzed.

Someone mentioned AC/DC -- their "Back in Black" album is the greatest ever for getting psyched.

P.O.D. has some great songs on "Satellite." "Youth of the Nation" will fire you up and stick with you (solid Christian message, too.)

Tribe of Judah is a new band with Extreme's singer (and former Van Halen frontman, too.) The album is called "Exit Elvis" and it really delivers a punch. I lift a couple times a week early in the morning and it gets me going from note 1.

Call me a freak, but I love listening to Classical music while I work out. Kind of a zen thing, but some of it can be quite inspiring (try vivaldi: the four seasons, or some Mozart). I think it's especially good before a race because I'm usually freaking out then, and violins make me feel good.

BTW, I LOVE Queensryche!!!

Oh yeah...let's see...and I take no responsibility for how lame or geeky other may think these choices are. Even though they are after all mine. Anyway, some artists I like:

Queensryche, Tool, Threshold, NIN, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Smashing Pumpkins...

Oh, and Kenny G.

I see nothing strange about classical music... so, I guess I'll join the club of "strange" by saying the only time I like to listen to blue grass is while I'm on my CT - after about 2 hrs... I slowly begin to loose touch with reality and crank up a little...:

I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow-Soggy Bottom Boys - Dan Tyminski

John Law Burned Down the Liquor Sto' - Chris King

And let's not forget the Dixie Chicks

White Trash Wedding, Sin Wagon, Lil Jack Slade, Tortured Tangled Hearts....

Top off with non-blue grass music such as...

Crawling in the dark by Hoobastank, some Nickle Back, Staind, The Calling, Foo Fighters, Joe Cocker, Mamma's and the Pappa's and some Carlos Santanna to bring me back to reality - also called pain.

I prefer to say I'm a bit eclectic.... and not so much - strange.

FWIW Joe Moya

BTW, If it's classical music - I like Mozart's "Flight of the Bumblebee" - short, fast and to the point. Great pick me up music.

Tool, Face to Face, Nickelback, Rage against the Machine, Metallica. There are just so much to choose from. There is no better way to burn the time indoor training then with a solid CD to listen to.

Anything by Celine Dion.

It'll test & elevate your pain threshold like nothing else.

At the risk of being laughed off the forum, I prefer a good Britney Spears remix, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Enrique Inglesias, etc.

No, I'm not a 12 year old girl, but hey, i like what i like. (The music not 12 year old girls)

Ok, first off, I can't believe what a bunch of pansies most of you guys are! I mean that in the most open minded way possible, though. All music is worth listening to, and it all has it's place, but come on, Britney Spears to get you pumped? (sorry Hershel, had to use that example) There's a bit of Metallica and Tool in there, which is pretty good, but Sum 41? Green Day? I'm sure Blink 182 isn't far behind.

So, now that you're thinking, this guy's just an ass, picking on all of our suggestions (I really like the classical suggestion, though. No sarcasm, I must try that...especially the Four Seasons, serious possibilities for trainer workouts) but stand back, if you're man (or woman) enough to listen to them, they will motivate you every time.
System of a Down. Awesome new metal with a conscience. All three albums are great, but here's 4 songs to start with if you're searching them on the web. Bubbles (from Steal This Album), Deer Dance (from Toxicity), War? (From System of a Down), and Chop Suey (Toxicity). They may take a couple listens to get used to, but if you like driving, motivating music, they're definitely my choice. Along with Metallica (And Justice for All), Rammstein, Tool, Slayer, Static X (good one Tom), Mudvayne, Disturbed, Soundgarden (Badmotorfinger). Feel free to slag my choices too....after you hear them, of course...

And no workout is complete without Johnny Cash's, A Boy Named Sue.

Anything from Iron Maiden. I especially like "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner"

With lyrics like this, how can you go wrong...

The tough of the track
With the wind
And the rain that’s beating down on
Your back
Your heart’s beating loud
And goes on getting louder
And goes on even more `til the
Sound is ringing in your head
With every step you tread
And every breath you take
Determination makes you run never stop
Got to win got to run `til you drop
Keep the pace hold the race
Your mind is getting clearer
You’re over half way there
But the miles they never seem to end
As if you’re in a dream
Not getting anywhere
It seems so futile

Chorus:
Run on and on
Run on and on
The loneliness of the long distance runner

I’ve got to keep running the course
I’ve got to keep running and win at all costs
I’ve got to keep going, be strong
Must be so determined and push myself on

Run over stiles across fields
Turn to look at who’s on your heels
Way ahead of the field
The line is getting nearer but do
You want the glory that goes
You reach the final stretch
Ideals are just a trace
You feel like throwing the race
It’s all so futile

I have to agree System of a Down rocks as does Metallica, Tool, NIN, nickelback (for a cooldown) and I would lump Corrision of Conformity in that group, for easy rides. Rammestein is good as is slipknot, static X and Monster Magnet but to really go put on Pantera, Slayer, Death, 6 Feet Under, Cannibal Corspe, El Nino and whoop ass on the computrainer.

Is it just my animals or do other peoples dogs and cats like the heavier stuff as well?
