More hour record attempts
1. Peter Megdal went after the 55-59 record earlier today, but I don't know how he did.

2. While hunting around for info on Peter's attempt yesterday evening, I stumbled across a live feed of Molly VH going after the 45-49 record. I happened to tune in around the 35 min mark, at which point she seemed to be struggling, and pulled the plug shortly thereafter.

3. The good news for those who like watching paint dry, er, people silently pedaling around in circles for 60 min is that she is apparently taking another shot about 8:45 pm EDT.

I enjoy the paint drying during the 1 hour of riding but realistically during the 1 hour of paint drying a barely notice changes. During the 1 hour of hour record riding, you get to see a split every lap compared to the target so that's interesting and the post event analysis paralysis is very interesting from a pacing/technique/optimization thought process.

I think the hour record is equally intersting or boring as an Olympic games 10,000m run event or even watching multiple heats in an Olympic 10,000m speed skating event or watching the 1500m swim. These events may be shorter in duration, but entertainment value wise, it's all close to the same thing that you're watching. Mainly the challenge of a human being trying to hit a pace time and hold technique together and not totally fall apart while losing concentration.

In case anyone else was watching and saw her crash at the end of her ride, follow-up commentary indicates that she only suffered a few scratches. The way things looked (until the camera turned away), it appeared that it could have been much more serious.

(It is all my fault for referring to hour record attempt as equivalent to watching paint dry, thus jinxing her... although in my defense, all of the excitement occurred after the hour was up.)

That looked like a hell of a body slam. You could tell she was getting very tired at the end. Glad she is ok!

I love watching hour records. If you've done similar efforts (and I know you have!) you can relate to what's going on.

He quit early. I wonder if he'll try again?

That's unfortunate, as I think yesterday was the last of the three days he had scheduled for an attempt. In fact, all the more surprising since he was targeting a Paralympic record as a "fall back."

Had she finished the effort or was she still in the process of the attempt when she fell?

Who crashed? Molly?

I watched most of her attempt (40' or so) it seemed like she was very far up on pace when she pulled the plug.

She finished the hour (plus extra partial lap), then immediately crashed when she turned up-track in turn 1 to scrub off speed. I don't know if perhaps the track was a bit dusty, or if she simply passed out. In either case, she wasn't moving, which made it a bit scary to watch (although as I told my wife, unless I was in serious pain, I don't think I would have moved either...just would have laid there thinking, well that sucked!).

ETA: If I recall correctly, she covered 46.6-46.7 km.

Apparently I didn't (recall correctly, that is). She covered 46.897 km:

From Molly's FB:

Colby Pearce, Gwen Afton, Allen Vugrincic, Ethan J Boyes, and Andi Smith all broke national and/or world records. (On the first day)

I know Andi Smith broke her own US record.

Any Spanish translations?

These attempts impress the hell out of me. The training that goes into it, the mental state that must be maintained, how far one must dig the hurt well, and no matter how fast you go, it doesn't end any sooner.

I've toyed with the idea of giving it a go at the Marymoor velodrome some time, but also know it would take a full year of dedication that, quite frankly, I don't have.

Kudos to anyone who even starts one of these things, regardless of the outcome.

He quit 20min in, with a 47.5km avg at that point. Maybe just wasn't feeling well the whole time he was there. Tough break. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH7OMFa78WE

Thanks. I did not realize that the video didn't start until over 30 min in, and thought it was a dead link.

So I have to ask: is everybody who attempts the hour down there required to ride a (the same?) red Cervelo T4? ;)

(Yes, I know that Bussi did not.)

Are there many comparable aero track frames out though (that are as easily available as the Cervelo) - I ended up buying a Fuji Elite, but a couple of folks don't think it's a terribly fast frame. Colby used to ride a TK1. The new Argon's look quick.

A lot of track frames seem to be made for sprinting rather than optimal aerodynamics. For the hour I wonder if a converted TT bike might be better?

maybe better than some options. Hard to believe any road TT frame would be better at low yaw than a t4 though.
Plus, not having to deal with owning a couple of hundred half link chains to let you swap gears is worth a lot of sanity.

Tough to beat a T4 with double Mavic discs on the boards.

Edit because: F'ing auto correct got me.

Fuji is faster than a TK1, which can be a bit of a dog depending on stem set up.
