Military Recognition
While browsing the news at a different sports' site, I came across this:
http://www.themat.com/pressbox/pressdetail.asp?aid=8162

In short, the Pentagon is commemorating military athletes, by picking one athlete from each of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard to place on a limited edition Cheerios box. I personally think that they did a great job choosing athletes and sports! Obviously, since I'm posting here, you can guess at least one sport picked!

That's great. But I think I'll start feeling better about this country once they start putting poet, novelist, artist and musician triathletes on Cheerios boxes. And then I'll feel even better once they start putting single mom triathletes and recovering addict triathletes and BOP grind-it-out-triathletes on Cheerio boxes. But I won't be holding my breath.

when's the last time you heard of a poet doing anything great for the defense of this county? How about we relegate the poets\novelists\musicians to a bag of Starbucks.

But, I guess we could put out a limited edition Snoop Dog-Dr. Dre edition of Cheerios - then you could have poets and musicians on the same box!!

Snoop and Dre's faces would probably best reprensented on rolling paper covers or on a pack of winston's. But good answer

Poets, Musician's, Novelist and Artist proudly put their mugs and/or signatures on their own products with the little copyright thingy next to them, and you know what that little copyright thingy means if not inquire with Slowman about our Litigiousness society an he'll feel you in.

Like the GI Joe doll of George Bush as a military pilot. It's getting a bit ridiculous. I accept the fact that a military is very important, in fact I grew up on military bases since my dad was a pilot/engineer in the air force, but this is getting a bit much IMO.

BTW, nothing wrong with military athletes or choosing a military career if so inclined. In fact military personnel would be expected to have an interest in fitness, but I don't get the Cheerio box idea. It sounds like subtle propaganda. Is Bush planning on invading another country?

I also would prefer to see novelists and other cultural icons on the cereal that my kids eat in the morning.

I wouldn't worry about it for those who are not thrilled about this. If you read the story they will only be sold in Military commissary stores. You won't have to worry about seeing them or your kids see them. I on the other hand will be looking for and buying one of each when they come out. But that's just me.

Why are you letting your kids eat cereal? Turn them PALEO!

Novelists as cultural icons? HA HA HA HA Sure, they are a real mentally healthy bunch.

Above said (mostly) in jest. I'd buy a Wheaties box with a hottie Marine on it.

"Like the GI Joe doll of George Bush as a military pilot. It's getting a bit ridiculous." (It's called capitalism--the USA is still a free-market economy. If I want to make a George Bush doll and put it on the market, it's my money.) "I accept the fact that a military is very important, in fact I grew up on military bases since my dad was a pilot/engineer in the air force, but this is getting a bit much IMO." (Then don't buy one of the dolls).

BTW, nothing wrong with military athletes or choosing a military career if so inclined. In fact military personnel would be expected to have an interest in fitness, but I don't get the Cheerio box idea. It sounds like subtle propaganda. (Are you saying President Bush is dictating to the directors of General Foods what pictures to put on their cereal boxes? I really don't think so. Maybe General Foods just thinks it will sell more cereal.) Is Bush planning on invading another country? (Hmm, there is a slightly socialist republic up north somewhere with a very weak defense.)

I also would prefer to see novelists and other cultural icons on the cereal that my kids eat in the morning. (Then you are in a small minority, like people who want more liberal radio talk show hosts. If there was a market for a cereal with pictures of novelists and poets on the box, then it would probably already exist. Maybe you could speak to the people who make Froot Loops?)

So in order to be deemed worthy of patriotic recognition, you have to fly over to another country and kill people?

The words of Thomas Payne, Walt Whitman, Thomas Jefferson, Harriet Beecher-Stowe, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes and John Steinbeck, to name a few, have done far more to shape, define and defend the ideals and values that make America great than anyone involved in the debacle over in Iraq.

If you don't see the significance that novelists have made to the development of human progress, then I would have to say that I feel very sorry for you. You should try reading sometime.

Who do you really think is mentally healthier - people who write books or people who propogate wars.

BTW, where are those WMD's.

Well, we did hold you off in 1812 and I do agree that our military spending should be increased, although not at the expense of some of our social programs such as national health insurance, etc..

I've lived in the states and was surprised how easily people there get stirred up over the rahrahrah patriot line without really thinking about it. The sad thing IMO is that the USA is becoming more insular from the rest of the world in political policy. As a result the world now perceives the US as a big bully boy rather than leading by example as it did several decades ago. I just hope you don't end up with any more Viet Nams.

Y'know, publicity for "minority" sports is never a bad thing. And as someone once said, any publicity is good publicity. If I would've had any clue that this would turn into an off-topic, warhawk versus peacenik debate, I wouldn't have posted the link.

Who f***ing cares what the rest of the world thinks.

I'm sick of hearing "ooh noo, the rest of the world hates us, they think we are bullys....oooohhhh noooo"

Sick of Euro whiners, get a grip, the US is the only major Super Power left in the world and that's the way it is.

Get over it, we do what we want, if you have not noticed ... we are more powerful than the UN (uhh remember Iraq?).

Thats the way it is.

Weapon of Mass Destruction. Was refering to Iraq, which was a really dumb thing to do on my part since those posts died quite awhile ago. Let's just hope Francois or Gary from SD don't read this.

My apologies for ragging on you. Must have got up on the wrong side this morning. Time to get back to posting about triathlon.

Interesting theory except one thing:

When looking at the history of the world, there is one constant "what goes around, comes around." The day will come when we are not as powerful, when we need the world's help. And this F*** the world attitude is going to come back to haunt us.

It's amazing how the moral compass got turned around so much after 9/11. We're obsessed with defaming or destroying anyone who questions our motives. It's as if 9/11 has become a mandate for us to act like a-holes.

And what's worse, we are not learning from the mistakes of the past. At least the Romans built an infrastructure (Carthage excluded) after they dominated a country. We're leaving Afghanistan to be the same third-world crap hole that attracted Al-Queda there in the first place.

Patriotism is a good thing, don't get me wrong. But this unconditional Lee Greenwood-esque devotion to our actions around the world is allowing a disturbing pattern of tit-for-tat that will do nothing to curb the terrorist threat. And our 500-pound gorilla attitude will eventually come home to roost. But then again, maybe that's the point. We warlords gotta keep fightin' against something, right?

I believe that we HAVE to find the WMD's, and we will, but dont forget that Iraq is the size of California and very difficult terrain. They are buried somewhere, it's only a matter of time before they find them.

Don't forget that we are also the the most compassionate country in the world. We are the BIGGEST, by far, supplier of food, medicine, $$ and loans, military support, etc., to the rest of the world.

If we truly became an isolationist country, then you would hear the real outcry. Offer a helping hand, but carry a big stick.

"If you don't see the significance that novelists have made to the development of human progress, then I would have to say that I feel very sorry for you. You should try reading sometime. "

Why is it people always glom on to novelists, poets, musicians, etc. as the end-all be-all to human progress? Is it because they provide something simplistically tangible (words)? Add a few quotations, drop a few names and the rest of us non-liberal schmucks just don't have a clue. We're simply ignorant, uncultured beasts, right? I tell you what. Give me the creators, innovators, producers, scientists, and engineers of the world anytime. They are the true unsung heros and the ones that make real differences. Without them, we'd all be screwed. But, you never hear their names in the press. You'll never see their faces on a Wheaties box. The liberal left will hardly notice their existence. In fact, they usually look at successful (wealthy) innovators with disdain as if their gains were somehow ill-gotten. The writers, poets, movie stars etc. have their place, but are by and large hanger's on who, like most of us, live and thrive on the successes of the truly significant.
