Magnolia Masters Pro Camp Swim Videos
Every year I try to come on Slowtwitch to share what we do at the Pro Camp I put on every January. The first one was in 2015 and I wrote an article about it that you can find here.

This year I decided to do something different to share coaching knowledge with the triathlon community. One of the local photographers/videographers who covers races came out to cover the camp. We are putting the videos together right now and should be finished in the next couple weeks. In the mean time, I'll release a video a day of the analysis I did with each athlete who attended the camp. I am more than happy to answer any questions about what we did and why.

The first analysis is with Alice Alberts. She is based out of Boston, MA and is a first year pro.

The second analysis is Lauren Hite. She is out of Alaska and a first year pro. She came from a power lifting background. Lauren has a lot of strength and one of the big things we discussed was increasing mobility mainly in shoulders and back. When she was able to increase her mobility she applied a lot of strength on the water.

Hi Tim. Thanks for all of your videos and tips, tricks & comments. The PVC pipe you're using to help teach forward motion rather than crossing over, do you have (or recommend) that being capped on the ends, or open ended, or do you think it matters?

You're welcome.

It's better with the caps and if you cut it to be shoulder width apart for you, then the end caps can act as a good reference point.

I hope this helps,

Tim

I can see both videos on the page.

You can always go to the Swim Easy Speed youtube page and find the videos. It's the two most recent videos published.

Okay, for some reason the videos did not appear when I was on my laptop but I can see them on my phone. Anyway, thanks for posting these. They’re very informative.

I’m having the same issue, but with a tablet. Can’t see it on the tablet but it’s fine on my phone.

You're welcome. I'm glad you like them.

The next analysis is for Parker Kerth. He is a young Age Group triathlete who has qualified for his "Pro Card," but has wisely decided to hold off until his swim improves. He worked hard during the camp and it'll be fun to follow his progress over the coming seasons.

The next analysis is with Brianna (Bri) Troksa. She comes from a running background (low 2:40) marathoner and is working to improve her swim. She improved a lot during the camp, more or less by about 6 seconds/100, and it'll be fun to watch her develop as a professional over the coming seasons.

If there are any questions, please let me know.

The next analysis is with Lesley Smith. Lesley is a long time pro triathlete. She ran track and cross country in college. She raced her first professional race in 2014 and she was able to take away some new ideas on how to train for the swim.

If there are any questions, please let me know.

It’s interesting to see how many pros struggle to get the hand entry just right. It seems that several of them enter too close to the midline, creating a bit of sideways momentum. A couple have one hand that’s too far outside. I guess getting it just right is not as easy as one might expect.

I have to admit, at some level it’s kind of encouraging. Knowing that even pros make these kinds of mistakes will help me be more patient with myself. It also reinforces the need for constant vigilance when it comes to technique as well as the idea that we could all benefit from having eyes on our stroke on a regular basis.

Thanks for sharing.

It’s fairly common and definitely a place where most everyone can improve. I worked with a swimmer a few months ago who I had coached when she was younger. She’s now in college and has gotten top 5 at NCAA Champs in the mile. Here’s her video….it’s always about focusing on the fundamentals….

The next analysis is with Jackie Hering. This was Jackie's first time at the camp and she did well. She came in with a collegiate swim background and dropped roughly 6-7 seconds/100 from the first workout to the last. It wasn't too surprising given that all the camp did was remind her of where swim gains from and how she got them in the first place. If there are any questions, please let me know.
