Macca at ITU Kitzbuhel this weekend: What ya got?
S. Hayes broke away last year and held on for the win. Can Macca equate such a feat? Is his biking prowess that much superior to the other ITU athletes? Can he still swim with the top group? Has he recruited any other athletes to go with him on the bike?

Personally, I quite excited to see the race this weekend.

Macca is always exciting to watch as you just never know... and he is one of the most talented all-round triathletes. Should be good

I am very excited to watch what happens, but I think he will be humbled, and he won't be anywhere close to the win.

Macca is already on their heads...

if he tries to get away on the bike, you will see all the runners go with him just to prove a point.... that is probably what he wants!

The entire event (IM) is like "death by 1000 cuts" and the best race is minimizing all those cuts and losing less blood than the other guy. - Dev

I mostly agree as I'm not sure about his swim fitness for ITU racing. But if he can catch the first pack, the hill Kitzbuhel course will lend very well to bike racing. Excited for sure!

yeah his swim is very key. I'm more interested to see how he swims than see how he runs. It is probably more a predictor of his potential for some late season results.

As he recovers from cairns, i don't see him running 32:xx right now. Maybe he goes 33:high if it's the same run course as last year.

The 2009 kitzbuel looked to be slightly short on the run. Last year looked legit, or at least more legit. Tough to compare as the bike in 2009 was obviously short, and who knows if they use the same course ( i remember last year they said something about road construction forcing a different course).

I would love to see him+whitfield+bennet breakaway and work together. "The Old Guard". I could see those three coming out of the water around each other, maybe a little ways back. Thing is, if there is a breakaway, Alistair will most likely be in it.

Clayton Fettel was a front pack swimmer when he was doing ITU, and Macca was well back of him, out of the swim in Cairns. Maybe that means nothing over 1500meters? I don't know.

nice write up by the ITU http://www.triathlon.org/...a_row_macca_is_back/

funny to see them actually mention a race outside of the ITU canon. THEY ACTUALLY SAID THE WORD KONA!!!!! It's always a little awkward with the elephant in the room. Their article on the "cross" world championship was bizarre as they sort of mentioned Conrad Stoltz's 4 Xterra world championships and utter domination of the same offroad format.

i predict he misses the front swim pack, is unable to bridge to the front bike pack, and then just jogs along.

Agreed.

Yep. If he can hang on the back of the front swim pack....huge win. If he can start the run with the front pack....best results possible. Top 20 would be great result.

Hey all,
Why not get the word from the horses mouth so to speak? We've got a great interview with Macca before his race this weekend where he talks about this and lots more.

The race is live on http://www.triathlonlive.tv tomorrow morning North American time.

It'll be a great race regardless of what happens.

My prediction too. Excited to see what happens, I'm a fan of Macca, but he's been away for too long and the raw speed will be too much for him. He's a warrior and a great IM strategist but he's not the pure athlete that the ITU studs are, at least not anymore.

I think misses the front swim pack, bridges up to the front cyclist and runs a 33:50 to place in the top 20.

Can a 33'50" get a person in the top 20? I would be surprised considering most of the top guys seem to be running under 31'30"

You do realize he's entered in the men's race, right?

Though they are undeniably great athletes, I have never really cared much about ITU racing. It's a credit to Macca that I might be taking a look at this one.

Not a criticism in the least, but just curious why? Did your interest in the sport pique from Ironman stuff? Genuinely curious.

The elite men’s race starts at 14:30 (local time) on Saturday 18 June.
The elite women start on Sunday, at 12:30 local time.

This is a good website to check out the what time that corresponds to in your country.

This is probably what's gonna happen --- however, IF Macca can make it out of the water & break away on the bike with some of the stronger riders like Chrabot & Brownlee, it could be really exciting to see how things go down

That is exactly what I think he will try to do.The guy has nothing to lose so he might as well try to tear the field apart before the run.

Good Point - If he can make the front swim pack and blow some people's legs apart on the bike, it will bolster his bid for the olympic team as a domestic. There's obviously still a lot of racing to be done, but tomorrow is going to set the tone for the rest of his campaign.
