Ya, figured that ITU was out for awhile, but I was wondering if you had thought about Super League? I'm sure they would love to have you there, but of course it would require a bit of sprint focus for a bit. It just looks so dam fun, I wish something like this was around and viable back in my day, I would have done anything to do that format, and for good money too!! But I'm always of the mind that you can do both in a season, especially if the sprint is early in the year. There is plenty of time to get ready for Kona, too much time for many actually.

And I see in your video that you train a lot with Reese, and it appeared that he was leading most of the 100/100 swims? Is he an equal or better swimmer than you are at the moment? Did look like once in awhile you guys may have switched leads, what is his swim background? And also looks like he runs pretty well too, so a very good training partner I would guess. But how does that dynamic play out in the house, being partners and training buddies?

Big fan of super league, and would love to try it if the schedule works.

Reece used to swim 50s and 100m freestyle, he is normally faster than me in the pool but he doesn’t have an open water swimming technique or background. Over longer distances and especially in open water I have the upper hand. Makes for good ‘rivalry’ because he is faster up to about 800m, we’re even over 1500-1900, anything over that I tend to beat him. He is a great running partner, he ran 2:34 at London Marathon last year and has recently been training full time as a professional triathlete too.

The dynamic of husband/training partner/coach works very well for us. Perhaps we can answer a few of these questions in more detail in upcoming videos.

2.34 with a sprint swimming background??? I dont do that even I have a buffalo after me for the 42k.....
Lucy, BTW, I am 40, but recently joined a tri squad after years swimming on my own and doing some waterpolo. Do you think it is possible to do the 5 tempo kicking if I train it? I lack of technique after years, and seems this is more up to a brain training....

Another fan here! Really looking forward to seeing races with you, Daniela and Anne (and of course a bunch of others). Mention Lionel straight at the start earned you some bonus points, it usually takes a few more post for a thread heading Lionel's way.

Hello Lucy, you are absolutely amazing and I am a huge fan. Was hoping to run into you at Club La Santa in December but think you had already left for the holidays.

I was so upset when you didn't win Kona again this year, I was left practically in tears. I also raced in Nice and also felt so disappointed when the day before they gave you the penalty - almost smashed my laptop when I saw that LOL totally unfair.

My question for you. I have no doubt you are capable of taking the top spot in Kona, but I was very surprised that after finishing in the various interviews and press engagements you just seemed so happy rather than angry about not winning again - the dog is cute, but does that make up for Kona...Do you think maybe you need a bit more anger/drive on a psychological level to bridge the gap to the top spot? Or is it just about physical development, or tactics? I found Ali's reaction at the finish line (much talked about on this forum - double Olympic medal winner) and yours in stark contrast - I am certainly more of the type of guy who will simply not accept to lose ever (I am not an elite athlete but have certainly had some let's call it moderate success in the business world so I feel I am allowed to have a view on what it takes to be at the top).

Have just re-read Matt Fitzgerald's "how bad do you want it" hence my interest here.

Hi there,

I get your point, but I don’t think anger is a productive emotion to display immediately AFTER the race. Of course I wanted the win, being overtaken so late into the run has given me a massive drive for next year, But you have to tip your hat to someone who lays down a 2:51 in Kona.

Of course I do. You are amazing. I absolutely want to see you on the top spot next year and it sounds like you are supercharged for it. Be less the nice Essex girl and more the natural born killer. Good luck!

Absolutely! Although old habits can be stubborn to change. I’ve seen many triathletes with this “I don’t need to kick, the wetsuit will save me and I don’t want to burn out the legs mentality”. Then they’ve learnt to kick and taken chunks off their times but more importantly they start to enjoy swimming more. It’s not so much the propulsion gain from kicking, it’s the far better body alignment and sitting higher in the water that’s the real gain. Goodluck!

Hi Lucy! Love to see you around here. Remember that picture of a young brit AG jumping in front of the Union Jack? I think that was your first appearance in ST, and little did everyone know that you'd become the great triathlete you are now!

No questions from me, just wanted to say thanks for sharing. I hope to see you at the top in Kona soon!

Hello Lucy, big fan here, I love the energy and fun of you and Reece’s various posts!
I hope that you will win in Kona soon and I love the post race energy and I agree that negative energy is not for every body and you seems to have fun in what you do and it is working for you!
This is a fantastic website/forum but sometimes you will get unsolicited advices or feed back and even some trolls!
Keep smiling and I hope to see you in person in La Santa where everybody has something nice to say about you!

Hi Lucy, I am curious about how you track your time in the endless pool. How do you factor in that time as part of your workload, it terms of metrics? Specifically, are you tracking it in a way like calories (with HR) or TSS? I have spent some time with in one, but it doesn't feel like normal swimming to me, and I don't know how I would be able to accurately track it in terms of pace and yardage, and therefore the effort and energy actually used if it were a normal part of training.

Wait...let me get this straight. Reece swam 50's and 100's competively (meaning he has the fast twitch for way sub 60 second events) AND he is already an open 2:34 marathoner?

If he is only slightly slower than you in 3.8km, I BET he could do something like 50+4:30+2:55 IM....so it seems like he has the tools to go sub 8:20...but I am guessing at the bike time, but I get if he can swim sprinting, then he has the legs to bike TT really really fast. You don't get to be a competitive swim sprinter without being able to tolerate the same insane burn in the legs as bike TTing.

....and to you, don't worry about the Olympics in Tri. Its all overrated. All those Olympians want to win Kona (ask Emma Snowsill's husband LOL).

Yeah. That is nasty good.

I went to uni in America to swim D1 and swam similar short events. Biking for me was easy, but no way I've been close to a 2:34. Running has taken me 10 years of effort to get to a 2:47. I can crack of a 15 ish minute 5k too, but the distance running still takes and inordinate amount of work after all of these years and my shorter events running don't seem to translate in to what I can do when I run over 30k or so.

Maybe Reece should be my coach. PS, shout out to my other swimmers from UK. Seems like we make pretty decent triathletes! ;)

That 2:34 open marathon off a sprint swimming background spans all ends of the energy system in a way few can. I think this guy has a ton of potential.

Back to Lucy though, I think racing less IM's through the year and more shorter races (maybe including Super League) is the way to go. Mark Allen style. She also has the huge advantage of being able to log a lot of aerobic volume in the pool and save her body through the season with less requirement for all that pounding all the time to get her top end fitness. Look at what Tim O'Donnell was able to do at Kona when forced into less run for a period and did a big swim - bike block and was able to have more resources left to run his fastest ever on his least amount of run training in the lead up. Lucy already has this advantage built in. Many tri pros would not be able to endure the volume and intensity she can put in the water so they have to get that aerobic lift from other sports.

Your run improved significantly obviously, as can be seen by your impressive 5k times.
What I noticed is your great running form. Did you work on it specifically?

Lucy - Now that you've been doing tri for a few years, do you ever miss the relative simplicity of training for just swimming??? By "simplicity", I mean no worries about bike malfunctions, flats, crashes, etc, and no worries about running injuries. Plus, you just go to the pool, with no worries about the traffic wherever you are riding and running. In many respects, swim training is a good bit simpler than tri training. :)

Love you Dev, but just 'no' to what you wrote here above. Easy for Jan to say this now (he's not going to go back to ITU racing at his age), but his opinion would have been different had you asked him in circa 2006-7. Even in 2009. And all those Olympians wanting to win Kona doesn't mean that they don't value having been an Olympian. They already achieved this. It was their dream, and the dream of most kids racing triathlons these days.
