London Marathon Cheat's Finish Photos

welp, this won't end well. Some poor guy running for charity lost his number toward the end of the race and was escorted off the course.

Meanwhile, an onlooker found it, decided to run in the last mile or so, grab the medal, and ta-daa . . . pose for finish photos. Now he's all over the freebie commuter paper.

What a clown.

There were quite a number of course-cutters this year. Obviously the temperatures caused a few people to struggle, but it's really disappointing to see people take the easy way out and still want to cross the finish line and collect a medal. One of them is even the secretary of Liverpool Running Club.

There's a good thread on the UK Runner's World forum:

Strange story. Strange that the guy who picked it up just had a fuel belt on too? Was he planning this? Was he out for a long run and pick it up? Did he make a joke of it the situation that fell in his lap? I feel terrible for the guy who supposed to finish but a little too dramatic for me...

Maybe some of the dedication should have gone to securing the bib properly. And could the London marathon still not use the chip on the shoe as a secondary verification of entry? What about his name on his jersey and using that as more proof? And was it about the finish and the medal for him or raising the money for charity. He likely raised more money for charity with the publicity which he should be proud of. Come to think of it, I wouldn't put it past human life to make this an entire grassroots marketing campaign stunt.

There was that much debris on the course he could well have picked up the fuel belt as well. I saw allsorts, sunglasses, gel belts.

As hot as they say it was, I'm sure a lot of fluids were splashing around, along with a sweaty shirt. Tyvek [as I suppose the bibs a re made from] isn't that sturdy to begin with, let alone when it's wet, so any number of safety pins wouldn't have been able to hold it, as they probably shredded at tholes in the bib

Unless he added extra ones at the sides as well as the corners?

YMMV

I am only slightly serious with a little bit of pink. I mean you pull the guy off the course because his bib is missing?

With 2 miles to go?

Nah, let the runners finish, then, no bib = no bling

Were the chips in the bibs? If so, then I would agree.

A marshall tried to haul a national TV news presenter off the course in the final few hundred metres a few years ago! Obviously they had a legitimate spot in the race but for some reason the marshall thought there was something wrong with their bib.

They take the sanctity of the finishing chute very seriously at that race!

To be fair, the guy who was supposed to finish didn't give the above quote, it was some other runner who felt the need to comment. As you say though, over dramatic.

And the guy with the medal - I think you're right, he just did it for a laugh - I wouldn't call him a cheat so much as an opportunist.

Separate shoe tag visible from picture.

Then it made no sense taking the guy off the course ... they could have seen his shoe tag and let him continue. Likewise, crossing with a bib shouldn't mean jack when there is no score.

Well this story doesn't get any better!

What a monumental a-hole! (The story implies he ran from mile 12, but its more likely he walked West from Tower Bridge - circa 4miles)

Hopefully his thieving, no job, separated, and homeless-ness will make him eligible for a quick return to his birth country!
