no matter how you slice it, a big moment for the sport. Good for Lionel!

That was a cute little commercial.

I guess. Nobody outside of triathlon knows who he is.

I enjoyed the Gatorade commercial featuring triathlete Chuckie V back in the 90's.

Good for Lionel!Actually, while monty will have to confirm, IIRC Mark Allen and/or Dave Scott were featured in several commercials back in the 80s/90s. In this current commercial, LS is only on screen for 7-8 sec and never close up. I might have recognized him if I watched it closely enough but normally I never watch the ads. In sum, I don't really think this is a "big moment" per se but rather just another footnote. The biggest things I noticed in the ad were Serena's boobs bouncing around. :)

I think it’s pretty cool that they included him rather than any of the plethora of mainstream sport athletes they could’ve used. That being said, It was such a short clip that I doubt it will increase his recognition among non endurance athletes

Chris legh's gatorade ad was by far the best triathlon ad, even had Keith Jackson do the voice over

Jeeeshhh! Dude was in what looks to be a national ad, so at least $100k I would say for some minutes of work. And actually they probably used stock footage he already had, but either way well worth the effort..

Ay Monty....Gatorade didn't use stock stuff; they hired a Pursuit Porsche Cayenne (Google that) for his 101 ride clips, which were preceded by the GSSI lab shots. (I missed seeing Serena on set the day before.)
We delivered that bike to Lionel the day before that shoot in Pescadero. That commercial is day 0001 of Lionel on a Canyon. Yours truly did his first fit aboard it. ;-)
Any exposure of our sport is good exposure! We love it, obvi....

Good job, so they paid him all that money for one day of intervals on his new bike!!! And yes, these types of exposure are great for the sport, even though they are mostly subliminal in nature. I got to do a Ford commercial that ran 6 years, so I know the gravy that goes with a few days of dealing with Hollywood behind the scene types, well worth it...(-;

I wonder how many viewers will believe the shots represent the sport of triathlon or just cycling since he is only on his bike.

Was this after he collapsed on the Queen K and had to have part of his colon removed b/c he was so dehydrated??? IIRC, that was during the '97 Kona race, but I'm not at all sure about the year. We need an archive of tri-centric commercials. :)

They have no idea. It’s a guy on a bike. They don’t even know it’s triathlon related.

That was it. I remember watching the ad during a halftime in the early 2000s. Thought it was pretty solid ad. It was only about Chris and how he recovered to win couer d'Alene. Nice spot for Lionel though. I'm sure he got a bit of change for the ad. Hopefully he can get a few more.

Triathlon Mag called it a National Ad...but it's not a National Ad since he's not American...therefore, for him he went international.

Not bitter. Just realistic. I only know about Lionel sanders because of this forum. I have plenty of triathlon friends who probably can’t name a current pro. They like participating in triathlons but don’t enjoy following it as a sport.
You are correct, Chris Leigh's finish line collapse was in 1997. That was the 2nd year that Kona did not use Gatorade after the title sponsorship of Gatorade ended with the "1995 Gatorade Ironman Triathlon". In 1997 the electrolyte replacement drink was the debut of MetRx ORS (Oral Rehydrating System, which was a terrible sports drink and didn't last much longer than that race. Plus 97 was a TOUGH year too. Hellriegel won in something like 8:33 after going 8:06 the year before. There was a lot of carnage that year. It is also the same year Sian Welsh and Wendy Ingram both collapsed right before the finish line and had a crawling race to the line.
