Instead let's let history be the standup comic. Look up the (true) story of the French-Mexican Pastry War. While I don't believe the French fleet was able to secure reparations for the French baker who's goods were consumed (and not paid for) by Mexican solders, they did manage to blow off General Santa Ana's leg at Veracruz, which was later buried with full military honors (the leg, not the general).

An American tourist in London decides to skip his tour group and
explore the city on his own. He wanders around, seeing the
sights, and occasionally stopping at a quaint pub to soak up the
local culture, chat with the lads and have a pint of Guinness.

After a while, he finds himself in a very high class
neighborhood..... big, stately residences... no pubs, no stores,
no restaurants, and worst of all... NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS.

He really, really has to go, after all those Guinness beers. He
finds a narrow side street, with high walls surrounding the
adjacent buildings and decides to use the wall to solve his
problem.

As he is unzipping, he is tapped on the shoulder by a London
Bobbie, who says, "I say, sir, you simply cannot do that here,
you know."

"I'm very sorry, officer," replies the American, "but I really,
really HAVE TO GO, and I just can't find a public restroom."

"Ah, yes," said the Bobbie..."Just follow me". He leads him to a
back delivery alley, then along a wall to a gate, which he opens.

"In there," points the Bobbie. "Whiz away, anywhere you want."
The fellow enters and finds himself in the most beautiful garden
he has ever seen. Manicured grass lawns, statuary, fountains,
sculptured hedges, and huge beds of gorgeous flowers, all in
perfect bloom.

Since he has the cop's blessing, he unburdens himself and is
greatly relieved. As he goes back through the gate, he says to
the Bobbie, "That was really decent of you... is that what you
call "British hospitality?"

"No" replied the Bobbie, with a satisfied smile on his face,
"that is what we call the French Embassy."

Being a Lance hater I rushed to read this thread and was ver disapointed for being a joke. I was not amused ;-)

And I just found out last night, watching 60 minutes one of their great French chefs committed suicide earlier this year after going nuts worrying about whether he would lose a star in the Michelin guide. Three to two stars...turned out didn't happen but he was obsessed with this.

thats it..the name of the Chef..sorry..guess food doesn't mean too much to me..other than as fuel for training...wow how uncouth of me...or what ever...not to care much about food...the food did look very tasty and very expensive on the show last night as they showed well over fed people indulging in eating the stuff at his famous hotel/restaurant. turned my stomach a bit to watch these people stuffing their faces actually. Don't know why for sure. Musta been after the narrator stated some people make this a pilgramage of a lifetime to get to his restaurant to taste his food...and the guy committed suicide over a star..but had a mulit million dollar empire going anyway..made me really start to think about the guy, and what could have been going on in his head at the time..sad really.

in April 1671, the Prince of Conde organized a 3 day party in the honor of his cousin Louis the XIV.
Francois Vatel (born Fritz Karl Watel -switzerland-) was the maitre d'.
Among the dishes, there was a very special dish based on fish, created specially for Louis XIV. Unfortunately, the fish didn't arrive on time, and unable to tolerate such a disaster (you need to put that back in the context of the Cour of Louis XIV...) he killed himself with a sword...

anyway, this happened 333 years ago...

the story was about a modern chef in France who committed suicide earllier this year actually...still trying to remember the guys name..but wow 333 years ago a guy kills himself over a fish dish. Didn't reallize its so hazardous to be a chef..though ya had to worry about singed eyebrows only.

it was sad really. my guess is that he suffered from a mental illness and it probably could have been very treatable with medication (this is only an assumption). his obsession, depression, compulsiveness, etc>all signs of illness. it's strange that nobody around him tried to get him some mental health help. (or at least nobody talked about encouraging him to get mental heath assistance from a professional)

it is sad and is a tragic loss.

Yes it struck me as soo sad with a lovely wife, three young children, millions to his name and was absolutely successful. However, our perceptions of ourselves can sometimes be soo completely 180 degrees from how others see us. We then miss that we are truly lovable terrific people after all. Yes I think he was suffering from severe depression which not treated. Perhaps he could have pulled through and enjoyed his success and family.
