Kayaker Needed for King Wolfe 11km Swim (Kingston Ontario, CA) 6 am July 6th

Hey guys,

There were some cancellations in the swimmer lineup for the King Wolfe Swim and the organizers said I can have an entry, however, I need to get an escort Kayaker by end of day today (July 4th).

The swim is a cool event from Kingston to Wolfe Island a small island in the middle of Lake Ontario with a wind farm (the wind farm is a cue that the Lake can get very rough, thus the mandatory need for escorts). Direct crossing route is 5km with 11km involving two loops of a small island on the way that adds 3km per loop.

So if anyone is in a vicinity and wants to have some fun, let me know! The organizers will provide a kayak. You don't need to be an expert Kayaker, but proficient enough to make the trip and handle yourself if water gets rough.

Good luck with the swim if you get the yaker Dev. I wanted to do that one but it didn't work out. I did do the 5K quarry swim at St. Mary's a few weeks ago . Click on link and see me at the end.

Race director told me I have till 8 pm tonite to rope someone into Kayaking support. The quarry swims look less 'subject to elements' than swimming into a wind farm in the middle of Lake Ontario.

I'm about 900 miles south of Ontario so won't be able to kayak for you. What about your son??? Isn't this what kids are for, to help their parents out??? In any case, hope you find someone soon and good luck with the swim!!!

Well, if I die and my son can't help me given that he has never Kayak'd then he gets his inheritence early so I am not signing up for that plan....I intend to blow every last penny on my wife and I LOL. Logella, if I blow $1800 on your plane ticket, then this would fall under the category of spending my son's meagre inheritence early, but my wife may prefer I spend it on something else!

Well it turns out that the prez of the Kingston ON tri club stepped up. Now as fate would have it, there is a chance of lightening storms in the EXACT WINDOW OF TIME as the race is supposed to happen!

Well, kayaking isn't really very hard to figure out, but glad your tri club prez stepped up. Hopefully no thunder and lightning. :)

Glad you found someone local - I could have possibly done it (lifetime paddler and at least in the same province), but man I'd have had to cancel/re-arrange a lot of plans and cash in a lot of points with the husband, even though we both love Kingston.

Hope the weather holds for you - best of luck!

Praying for no lightning. Let us know how it turns out. That race is on my bucket list. 11K is pretty ambitious. If you can do it in less than four hours you could probably do the Rottnest channel race. Or at least they would let you in I think.

Well the threat of lightening was high, and waves were reasonably turbulent (although I have seen a lot worse) and Nadine Bennet (Race Director) working with the Coast guard and Navy set a backup course that was 4 loops as they needed to have us close to shore and ideally everyone off the course by 10 am.

One of the ladies in my wave measured it at 7800 yards or around 7km which seems about right as my time was a slow 1:52 or so (I swam with no watch just feel so waiting to see results). Apparently with the last minute backup course setting, a few of the buoys blew off course before they got it under control which kind of makes sense as there is no way the course was 1500m.

I will write a more detailed report. It was only my third outdoor swim (previous were 5km and 7km). I have plenty of pool mileage but I needed around 30 minutes in the big waves and chop to get the rythm down and stop swallowing all kinds of water.

Mistressk thanks for the offer. I got one of the ex Navy guys who is a prof at RMC as my kayaker and not only that, but him and his wife put me up at their place and saved me $200 on hotels!!!!

I'd say 1:52 for 7000 m in pretty rough open water is pretty good. That's 1:36 per 100 m with no walls and rough water, so prob you'd have been at least 1:30 in your standard 25 m pool. Holding 1:30 for 70 x 100 m on 1:30 is quite good IMO.

I think your time is pretty impressive. I remember swimming in fairly rough water many years ago in the K town tri. I did 1:27 for 5 K in the quarry swim but it was almost glassy. Last year and this year I got a bit queasy at about 4 K which makes me wonder what might happen at longer distances in rougher water.
