KONA SPECTATING
HEY! I'm heading to watch the race in Kona this year, but have never been to Hawaii. How early should one get to the start and where is the best place from which to watch the swim start?

Get there about 6AM. You will see what appears to be an old mission style church/museum about 400 yards past the swim start line. There is a long wall all along the ocean, great to sit on and have a Kona coffee and watch the swim. Then hurry up by Wendy's/ Starbuck's and get a seat in the shade along the road. This is a loooong hill that starts the bike leg. Everyone climbs the hill right out of the water. Great viewing again along with a Starbuck's :~). After the bikers are gone get a bite to eat and walk about 1 mile to the T2 area. Again if you get there early you can get some shade under the roof of a building. You will see it. Also public restorroms there. From there back to the finish line which is right by where you started. Get there early enough and you can get a bleacher seat. It is a great day. I have been there several times. Enjoy the island while you are there too.

Aloha,

Larry

Or sign up as a race day volunteer - I am doing a double shift in T1/T2 starting at 4:30am.

But I think the volunteer signup closed in mid-Sept.

With all the course changes, it would probably be a good idea to print this out and bring it along.

Thanks for the update, I didn't realize they were changing the course (again).

I know that they still need volunteers in the penalty box area, as I received an email this week. The person to contact is:

Robin Wilkerson

Email robin_wilkerson@yahoo.com

Telephone 808-329-7165

Also, if one were interested in volunteering, I would stop by the IM office when you get to Kona and ask them if they still need people.
