I am going to switch out of the 400 IM and into the 509 free if they let me. It’s pointless to do a race with 4 laps of breaststroke hahahaha . Good workouts Monte keep it up and you will have some great swims in a couple weeks

I love the 500, but cue the "lap vs length" debate ;-)

Put these two workouts in the wrong month fishes thread, so moving them over to their rightful place;
July 1st

6x100@1;30buoy(1;19/18/17/16/12/10) fastest ever warm up swim for me lately
6x100@2;00 as 50 kick/25drill/25 swim, strokes(1;31 to 1;38's) this seemed pretty fast for kicking and drills stroke
4x50 fly@1;00 descend(37/36/35/34). Tony started at 34+ and went to 32
2x100IM@2;00, 2nd one fast(1;19+/1;14) first one was supposed to be 1;24, uh oh!!!
3x50fly@1;00, 2nd fast(43/35/44) had to do kick, kick pull on the easy ones
200IM steady working on breakouts(2;45+)
2x50fly@1;00(43/35) kick, kick pull again on #1
2x100@2;00 50 back/50 breast, 2nd one hard(1;28/1;19 high) very surprised at that last one
1x50fly(35)
200IM strong(2;39+) was pretty much all out for me
100IM for time(1;13) dead arms but put together a decent 100, best time of year
500pull(6;09)
3100SCY in little over an hour, boy are my arms tired!!!!

July 2nd

So day 2 at Tony's pond, and I was still trashed from yesterday's epic fly/IM swims. I got to pick the workout today, so opted for a set of 400's broken up. He seemed fresh and unscathed, and it was apparent I was going to be 2nd wheel after the first couple sets, pretty much straight through on everything:

4x100s@1;30(1;17/18/17/16) one to two body lengths behind
2x200 buoy@3;00(2;36/2;31) narrowing the gap a bit to one length
400pull@6;00 (4;39) sat on the lane line next to him about a body length and a half the entire time, then closed to a photo finish last 50
400IM kick@9;00(7;25) was a bit faster, but not by much
400IM for time@7;00 (5;34) biggest surprise of the year for me, this was close to my actual goal time for nationals. Didnt see any clock, but Tony said he was out in 2;43 or so, I was about 4 seconds back at 2;47 then. Closed that entire gap on the breast, and then did about a 1;16 to finish it off. 19 seconds off my previous best workout swim, and still did one lap of kick, kick pull on the fly.
400pull@6;00(4;58) Tony blasted off and I never saw him again..
200 broken IM, 50's@2;00 (fly(32/back37/breast/38/free/29) 2;16 total time, best by far all season. Tony was a hair ahead in the fly, 3 seconds on the back, clawed a couple back on the breast, and another photo finish for the 29 free.
100 or so easy swim
100IM get out swim(1;12) best in ages, felt peppy all the way through

2800SCY and my arms are tired!!

And a huge thanks to ST'er Tony for hosting me and being my carrot these past two days. I think it netted both of us some great workout times, and should be the last stepping stone to about one more really hard week before taper time...

And I hope you can switch events there Tony, they seemed so be pretty flexible this time around, but get on it quick before the actually do the heats...You will crush the 500 too, not one lap of breaststroke!!!!

Well, week 8 of Flipturn School was a strange one.

I did 4 sessions - 3 in the pool, and my first one of the year in the lake. The lake session was lovely.

We had quite a heatwave recently, and that caused me to sit on my arse a lot. I believe that most athletes will know that as soon as you change your routine drastically, your body goes into some kind of shock, the defenses go down, and presto - you get ill. I caught my first cold in 3+ years - right at the time of Throw Your Mask Up Into The Air day. Oh the irony.

However, the flipturns continue to get better. The lifeguard/coach noticed how "quick" they have become - just as I was thinking that I'm not hesitating during the turns anymore. This makes me happy.

I only swim.
I used to run. (31:09 10k)
I never did Triathlon.

Being a newbie, I must bite on this!!

"Lap" means out and back, right? ie 2 lengths?

My first post-surgery swim race — the Coronado 1 mile Roughwater Swim. While I’m happy with my time; 26:23, I was only good enough for fourth place. My gf, Heidi, got first with just a slightly slower time than me.

Nice Job there Steve, are there that many old guys ripping it, or are you just off your game still from your surgery? Was it a fast swim for you, or survival? I see back in your results that a guy named Tony Richardson swam the race, wonder if it is the old triathlon pro I used to race who lived in La Jolla? Did you get to see him?

I stopped on our drive home today from the Orange County training camp I did, and had a nice solo swim at Santa Clarita while the kids hit the water park. Decided to just do a meat and potato type workout after all the hardass stuff Tony put me through, and even got a PB in my 500 pull today:

6x500 As; 2swim@7;30(7;10/6;41)1 IM kick@10;00(9;30) 3 pull@7;00 descend to all out on last one(6;25/6;21/5;52-1;11/12/12/10/07 new PB)
15x50 as 2 buoy@;50/100, 1 fly@1;10--buoys(4o to 38's) fly(38/38/39/39/37)
3750SCY in 61 minutes

Also saw this and was surprised that professional swimming is finally following some of the major sports. I did not know there was a draft, would be interested in seeing some of the salaries and signing bonus's these folks are getting. Hope it can some day be self sufficient and not need some Russian Billionaire to foot the bill as his hobby...

Hey Monty, I haven’t even looked yet at who beat me. I felt kinda clunky for about a quarter mile, then it started coming together and I started passing people. I felt stronger, though, a few days ago. Perhaps yesterday’s super hard Zwift session took some out of me. But, I did have a 1:13 pace, so I certainly don’t consider the swim off my mark. It was a 60-69 age group, too, so at 65 and still recovering, I can’t complain at all.

3300 SCY
300 (4:09)/200K/300P (3:52)
8x100 on 1:45 alt stroke/IM (1:29-36)
4x50K on 1:15
8x100P on 1:30 (1:14-7)
4x50K on 1:15
8x50 on 50 (38-40)
100 easy.

Switching swim training to lots of 50s and 100s to work back towards 10x100 on 1:30 and hold them all under 1:20. Not enough short intervals this summer and speed (relative) is suffering. Congrats to all you guys racing.

I think switching to some speed every session will get you to your set pretty quick. I know I could now do that, especially if I'm in a lane next to Tony!! Now I just got to do 10 of them@1;18, in a row!!

4th hard day in a row here, snuck into the lower pool and took kids to water park again today. And the let us have over an hour since we were the last swim of day too, so grabbed a few of those minutes:

28x100as (3x100swim/buoy@1;40/1 stroke@2;00) swims(1;25/24/23)buoys(all 1;19/20) breast(1;31/29/28) fly(1;21/1;23)back(1;27/1;26) 200IM kick(3;56)
4x200pull@2;50(2;35/32/32/32)
4x50swim@1;00(38/37/36/35)
4000SCY in 69 minutes

Was super arm tired today, but wind felt great. Finally not gasping after every hard swim, so I just might have something to taper of off in 10 days!!!

A rude awakening after 4 days in a row of low and cool pools. My high hot pool was just there waiting for me to return and spank any notion I had of beating the heat!!

200s(2;50)
13x200 as(2swim@3;10/1 IM @3;30) swims(2;44/42)Pulls(2;31/31/29/31/33/33) IM's(2;47/2;47/2;49/broken 50's@1;00- 2;34//37/42/43/32) 200IM kick(3;57)
5x50buoy@1;00(40/39/38/37/36) 100IM kick
200 easy pull(2;39)
3350SCY

Got super hot half way through and had to pull the plug on effort a bit

Well, middle of my 2nd week of 3x1 hour swim practices with the local masters team to get back in shape. Still gassed at the end of the workout on relatively low yardage, but better than the very first workout last week.

300 yard warm-up (200fr, 100bk)
8x50 kick on the side @1:00 (mostly 48s)
8x50 one arm free drill @1:00 (mostly 41s)
5x200 free @3:00 (2:21/2:24/2:25/2:25/2:28 - cardio was fine for these, but arms just got too tired at the end)
5x100 free build @1:30 (1:12/1:10/1:10/1:11/1:15 - the build part didn't really happen)
5x50 free fast @1:30 (30/31/32/29/28 - I was gassed at the end of these)
150 warm-down
3000 yards total.

1 hour really isn't much time in a team setting. I think these will be good to start for a few months but may have to supplement when I'm back in the swing of things. Luckily there's a bunch of fast people there for motivation to catch.

I've also set two goals for myself for further motivation. First - beat Sam Long and Lionel Sanders' 1000y time trial times. For some reason seeing their videos about getting better at swimming really motivated me to start swimming again. Second - get under 51 seconds for a 100 yard free off the blocks by this time next year. I figure if I can get within 2s of my PB I'll be happy.

I've been doing upper body weights every other day.
I'm 2 weeks post surgery and the endorphins from my June 17-22 swimming interlude have faded, and now I am in the catch 22 needing to exercise to deal with crankiness from not being able to exercise :-(

They denied my request to switch events so I am stuck with the 400IM. I took 3 days off this weekend which I felt good on tuesday and thought maybe I would be partially rested. Swam Tuesday night and it was total trash. Sprinting 50s in 34/35 and just felt like puking. Did my 3400 and hit the weight room and went home and fell asleep. Going to try an afternoon swim and keep at it. LCM masters meet this sunday and swimming 5 events. 100fly, 200IM, 100fr, 200fr and 400IM and I may have to just scratch some of them if I start out swimming too slow.

Bummer about switching events...

I just had a lovely week off of swimming as we headed north for the long weekend. UGH not ideal but hey, whattya gonna do?

Got in today and did 4k of all kinds of stuff. No pressure no clock or anything of note.

I did do
6 x 25 of each stroke on 30 and a 600 kick w board.

Body felt much better after. Had a massive weekend of riding as I rode to our vermont place and back with some mountain biking while up there.
All in all it was about 25k climbing and over 300 miles of riding.. so, there is that.

Tomorrow is our speed session and next week we are doubling up thursday and friday speed work (with LOTS of rest) prior to heading to NC for nats.

MyMainSet tomorrow....

4 x 50 on 2min. -- The first 3 are max the 4th is easy
1 x 100 max
300 easy

doing 3 rounds before we do our kick
kick will be

50 max 1:30
4 x 25 max on :45
50 max
(oh man those hurt like hell)

My little sprint group is growing! Potentially 3 more folks joining next week so that will be fun.

all for now

You should be nice and fresh for the last push to nationals now, unless all that riding wiped you out. I'm swimming tired again, like Tony I think the days off hurt more than help. It will be good when it is a day off in the pool swimming easy and doing a couple hard efforts, then shower and go home!! Did kind of a sprint fly/breast/1k training day today. Mostly focused on the 50's stroke:

10x100@1;40--5swim(1;26 to 1;16)5 buoy(1;16 to 1;13)
6x(100IM kick@2;30/50fly hard) kicks(1;57/58's) fly(37/35/34/34/34/33)
4x(2x100p@1;30/50 breast@1;30) pulls all1;16/15--breast(43/42/42/42) 100IM kick
3000SCY
