January Fish Challenge

Happy New Year, fellow fishies.
I didn't swim on New Year's Day. Instead, I ran with a crazy group of ultra runners and did 20 trail miles with 4500 ft of climbing. For those in the OC area, started at Silverado Canyon and ran along Main Divide to the Death Star (Doppler Radar Dome), then down Black Star Canyon.
Today was an Open Water swim. Temp below 60, so I wore my wetsuit, with much teasing from my fellow die hard skin swimmers. Did 2.2 miles in just under 47 minutes. I followed that up with a beautiful 8.7 mile run in the hills behind the swimming hole - Shaw's Cove, Laguna Beach.

Nice job on the workouts, HS.

I haven't swum yet this year. I hurt my infraspinatus muscle somehow (doing pushups, I think). It is slowly feeling better. I did 2:20 on the trainer on new year's day, and today I ran 10.2 miles with speed and did 20 min on the recumbent bike at the gym. I will get in the pool tomorrow or Monday.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

For the first 40, I started out at about 1:22 for the first few, then was mostly 1:19-:20. With the snorkel, I was mostly :24, but started falling apart a bit. The last 35 were mostly in the :24-26 range.

The pool I normally swim in, down the hall, is yards, but I wanted to do this in meters. The pool I swam in is the re-purposed "instructional pool," and is usually kept at 84. I was able to get it adjusted down a bit, but it only made it to about 81 or 81.5. Still a bit warm. I was the only one in it. The cool bit was that the sun comes in at that time of day, so I was able to follow it as it rose in the sky and moved from lane-to-lane for the first 70 repeats. I was swimming in bright sunshine about 1 lane wide the whole time.

Happy New Year Fellow Fish! HS, good to see you doing all that running stuff!

Swam like crazy the week before Christmas... including 3 days of 5km doubles and a 100 x 100m day... Then off to Maui for a quick family vacation and good swimming and a little kiteboarding. I found a Master's swim group in Lahaina, and some good open water swims around Kaanapali/Black Rock. It was a great finish for the year. I got to my goal of 1,000,000 yards! I can see a million yards as my milestone now. I am trying to get back into shape for the 1hr ePostal at the end of the month.

This year the Long course meters National Championships visits Oregon August 20.. and, it looks like the 10km National Championships is at Applegate lake (Oregon) July 16... It looks like this will be a 'swim focused' year (no big Tri races on the horizon).

Sat on a plane yesterday, and taking a day off today. XC Ski tomorrow and back in the pool Monday. Here's to a swimmingly fine 2016.

Tried to swim on New Year's Day but forgot my goggles so I ran 6.2 miles instead.

This morning was 80 minutes on the trainer followed by a 4 mile run

Did you do a mid pool turn or get out on the opposite side you started?

Opposite end. I dove in at the deep end. It's the only way I can get started. It's also the end of the pool that has the fill pipe, which I turned on to help keep me cool. I dunked my head into the pipe fill after #40 and 70, and filled my bottle from the pipe as well.

Bad a$$ times you guys are holding. I did the New Years day hunerd hunerds SCY on 1:40. My best 100 set yet, I didn't use fins at all, used the pull bouy on and off, maybe 40% of the swim but didn't feel fatigued until about 9,000 yards in. I average around 1:30 pace for most of it, dropped to 1:35 that last 1,000. Did a good 1 hour trainer ride this morning followed by a 3.3 mile run trying not to slip on the icy sidewalks.

Worst swim workout ever!
Swam 1000 scm today. Due to 4 fractured ribs freestyle was not a good idea..did some breaststroke and backstroke instead.
No need to warm up or cool down though...

HNY to you! I've been doing a lot of running with a group of ultrarunners. They're grooming me for a 100, but I don't know. It's not a 'bucket list' item for me. Maybe a 50 or just 50k. But, I also need to keep up on my swimming.
Yesterday I got in 2.2 miles in the ocean, with wetsuit because of 59 deg temps and I have rid my body of its bioprene layer.
Today, a quick little 3.1 mile run early this morning as a warmup for NOVA Masters Triple Crown Part 3 (I missed 1 & 2)
- 100 repeats on the 1:20 (25y pool). I got in 33 100s before the wheels started getting loose, so I dropped down to 5 100s & 2 75s, but that was still getting hard to make the send-off, so eventually, all 75s until the final repeat, back to 100. 41 100s and the rest 75s for 8525 total yards in 2:13

Ouch that just sound awful. Last year I spent a few months with an inguinal hernia, breast stroke, mostly the kick, damn near killed me.

No swim today. 10 mile run moderate effort in 1:11:40.

It was more to do with New Year's Eve revelries. They lasted until Jan 2nd....

I'll get the WOD's started up again. Just too much on the go over the last couple of weeks to think about them.

Just to bring this thread back to earth with some shitty swimming:

Monday: 2200scm

500 w/u of 50's, 25 drill/25 swim
15 x 100 leave on 1:50 (averaged around 1:33-4)
200 easy

Tuesday: 4000m
first Masters since the 16th 1000m time trial

3x300 (1st swim, second was 75's of Kick/Drill/Swim)
10 x 50 kick

3 x (6 x 100 alternate PB, and fast swim) then a 100easy in 4min of rest.

I did the first 6 in 1:40 leave time. I went way to hard on the first 100 and swam it in 1:20flat! My fastest 100 ever.
the second I did half at 1:40 leave and then bumped it up to 1:45. Paying for the first set.
3rd set was all @ 1:40 and I died on the last two hundreds collapsing to a 1:38 on the last one.

500 easy broken up into 100's of 25drill/75 swim.

Nice easy run at lunch and might hit the rollers tonight for 1/2 to recover.

Well done. But in actuality you really only were not swimming for an hour and 1/2 more than me. In a 24hour day that's not a whole lot more of not swimming time.

Just putting things into perspective. Now if you have an FTP under 200...then we can talk.
