Jan. 1: 7 mi easy run
Jan. 2: 28 mi bike (easy because of some icy spots on the bike path), 4200m swim, a couple of lower body strength exercises

my goal was to kill some anxiety this morning. I thought the 1:35 interval would be threshold pace but it wasn't... :-)
40 x 100 first 18 on 1:40, then 22 on 1:35
4 x 50 c/d alt kick, swim

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

Getting a bit tired this week - probably because I increased my swimming amount too fast last month.

Maybe I will stay at ~25 km / week for the coming week. The idea of getting to 30+ is so daunting.

Enjoy the swimming. We're back on lockdown so our pools are closed in Ontario.

100x100 last night. scy.

Been swimming 2-3 times a weeks for 45 minutes. A lot of sprint workouts so between 2000-2500 yards per workout. It was not an easy jump to 10000.

We slowed down the intervals this year to accommodate the fitness levels.

4 x (5@1:45, 5@1:30, 5@1:45, 5@1:30 5@1:45).

I did 8 kick with fins, the rest straight swim.

We got the Y to stay open late just for us, 12 people in 6 lanes, split between ends of the pool.

Managed a few swims over the holidays, but didn't do anything structured, so this morning was very much a reset and restart kind of swim. Took some time to try to feel the water:

1800 as 100 free/ 50 back (continuous) - spent the 100s building by 25s, trying to feel the body roll and be less of a "tugboat"
4 x 100 pull - using ankle bands to dial in body position
10 x 50 as 25 easy BS / 25 hard free

2700m

Masters swim club is still cancelled, should be an announcement later this week re. whether we can start up again. I'm aiming to get three or four swims in every week this year, COVID-permitting.

My pool is closed on holidays and weekends so today was the first day back. I haven't been in 3 months, so today was short and sweet - 1,100 scy.

4 days in...
Day 1. 90m !!!! Yep. 90 whole metres.
But it was a lake at 3.2C for New Year's Day and my hands felt like they were on fire.

Day 3. 2000 yds. Ad-hoc some steady some short sprints. (40yd open air pool).

Day 4... BoZo just shut all sports inc open air lidos and 'organised lakes. National Lockdown #3.
(Indoor pools in most areas already closed) since Nov or Dec)

Feck. I think that's blown it mid March or maybe April. Baaaaaastaaaard.
I can go in the River about 3/4 mile down my road. And can meet 1 other person. 3 or 4 C with just 1 other person....not too safe me thinks

For all you folks who can go and swim. Enjoy it whilst you can !!

Your new swim paradigm Steve has set you apart from any Covid pool closures, and the hassle of making reservations like lane swimming was a getting a Beatles concert ticket. Good for you.

I got skunked right after xmas on getting in, so a week out of the water. My regular pool opened today, so got in and did my hour, but in a hyper chlorinated, very uncomfortable PH. Shit happens when you are closed for a month I suppose. Getting the feel back, so going to use this week to hopefully get back to where I left off:

7x200s@3;15( descend 2;55 to 2;38)
4x150IM kick@3;13(2;55 to 2;43)
4x200p@3;00(2;35/33/30/26) 100IM kick
4x100@2;00, odds IM, evens pull- IM's-1;26/1;23- pulls-1;18/1;12
3300SCY

On another note, my friend and old pro triathlete buddy Michael Collins, just got SPMA masters coach of the year. Congratulations to a well deserved honor my friend...

The reservation setup up north in Roseville is much easier than down here, but still, just 45 minute sessions. After pool swims up there, we had planned to try to get into a pool at least once a week for intervals and drills down here. Haven't made much effort that way yet, though.

Collins has done well during the pandemic. With pool closures, he started up OC Seals to better teach triathletes ocean swimming techniques. It appears to have been a great success. I think he would be a great Herb interview candidate.

dev, I'm really sorry you don't have pool access.

Sunday rode 60.5 mi
Monday ran 8.7 mi, did 64 min easy stairmaster
Tuesday rode 50.66 mi, ran 2 mi

7.5 mi run in 70 minutes, 1500m goofing off. I was going to do some fast 100s but I missed the turn on the first one - almost swam into the wall because my head was dreaming - so I just went back to easy.

2650m this morning, with some beginner IM (i.e. I did one-arm fly because I can't yet manage more than about 25m of butterfly before it becomes "butterflail" and I redline).

6 x 400 as:
i. 100 free, 100 pull buoy, 100 pull buoy + paddles, 100 back
ii. 16 x 25 drill
iii. 4 x 100 pull buoy
iv, v, vi. 400 IM (with one-arm fly)

c/d: 250 back

8x100@2;00, odds IM/evens pull- IM's(1;23/22/20/19)pulls(1;14/12/11/09)

First swim yesterday in about 10 days. Pool heater was broken, so water was upper 60's while air was lower 60's.

300 easy
8x50 drill
3x600 aerobic effort on 8:00
2x300 pull with paddles and ankle band
300 swim aerobic effort
was going to do 2x300 pull with paddles and buoy, but the rain picked up and the lifeguard kicked us out 150+ yards into the first rep (only two of us brave enough to swim in the unheated pool this early). Policy is they empty the pool when the rain gets too hard to 'see the bottom'. I don't know how they can't keep track of only two swimmers with bright caps on in a pool that never gets more than 4.5ft deep.

Our Y is the same. The guards have to see the bottom and, it has to be 40 or above. It did not used to be the case, but I think it’s pretty much the norm now. Our pool use to have a 32° limit.

2400m this morning, because the fly sets slowed me down so much!

w/u: 400 as 100 free, 100 back, 100 BS, 100 free

m/s: 3 rounds of 400 as:
4 x 25 Fly drill 3-3-3
4 x 25 Fly drill 2-2-2
4 x 25 Fly drill 1-1-1
4 x 25 15m fly, 10m BS

c/d: 800 free

The fly drills in my main set felt like an interval workout, but I could actually feel improvements as I worked through them - the final round was the easiest of the three.

Did pretty much the same exact workout I did a couple days ago, but on faster intervals and much faster times. So feeling about 95% back after the holiday break, feels good again:

1000swim@14;30(14;15--7;15/7;00)
500IM kick@9;45(9;27)
1000pull@12;45(12;25--6;15/6;10)
500IM kick(9;16)
3x100p@1;30/50fly@1;00- pulls-1;14/15/16. fly's 38's
50 kick
3500SCY in 55 minutes

Now it's the season cold enough for me to do hard intervals but pool is closed at least until the end of this month. I'll probably give up swimming after this year if I don't see any improvement, no matter what the reason is.

I did 3 km in the ocean though, air was 10°C and water was 18°C.
