Ironman and Cancer
Dan was kind enough to allow me to post this here:

All:

I am writing to each of you to ask for your help. Two years ago, my mother
Ramona was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite aggressive chemotherapy
and surgery, last year it spread to her lungs. Again, my mother underwent
surgery and chemotherapy. As recently as three weeks ago she had been
given a clean bill of health. Last week I was called back from a business
trip by a telephone call from my sister. My mother had become ill and my
father took her to the hospital. Subsequent tests have revealed no less
than a dozen tumors that have attacked her brain. My mom is one of the
strongest people I know - and she is fighting this latest set-back with
everything she has.

I am scheduled to compete in Ironman USA this Sunday (a three sport race
covering approximately 141 miles). My mother's condition has taken all the
steam out of me for this race. However, I see it as an opportunity - a
chance to help other families and cancer survivors deal with this killer.
As such, I am asking each of you to join me in your thoughts, prayers and
spirit at IM USA by raising funds to help find a cure for breast cancer.

The Ironman is basically a 141 mile event and as such, I am asking each of you to
make a donation per mile that I complete. For example, a dime per mile
equates to a $14.10 donation; a $0.25 cent per mile donation equates to a
$35.00 donation, etc. (the sum to be entered is the total amount, not the $
per mile). Or, just pick a figure and make a donation.

Here is a link to my personal fund-raising page for you to make a donation

I'm sorry to hear about your mother's setback. Have you posted this message on other websites? One very supportive and responsive group is Tri Newbies Online- www.trinewbies.com. I check both this site, and that one regularly, and haven't seen this message there.

Race well, and happy wishes to your mother and family. Be sure to report back after the race,

-Jack
