Ironman Boulder questions from out-of-towner
Quote | Reply
Hi all,

Couple of pre-race questions about IM Boulder:
  • Which section of the bike route is safe/convenient/recommended to ride before the race?
  • Same question but for the run route?
  • Any pre-race group ride recommendation?
  • Which pool in Boulder to recommend for lap swim session?

Thanks in advance!

Most of the roads the race uses are ok for riding, some are busy but have shoulders, others are small country roads.

For running, the boulder creek path is a great running trail and is where most of the IM run course covers.

No clue as to pre race group rides.

There are several pools open to the public (for a fee) and some with masters practices. Just google that question

Scott Carpenter is where you want to swim. That said, Boulder Aquatic Masters has open water swims at the reservoir though I don't recall on which days.

As for the bike, US 36/Foothills doesn't seem to be safe to ride anymore (IMO) but Diagonal highway has a generous shoulder.

Ride the whole route. They are some of the safest roads in Boulder County.

Same for the run. Just park at the Res entrance, then go. Or do it on a bike.

Stay away from most of the group rides. That's just a tip to keep you safe.

Tons of public/private pools in Boulder. Best place to spot the fastest pros is at CAC on 29th street and RallySport. Best masters swims are at CAC though. Go to their website for times.

The is swimming at Boulder Res Tuesday through Friday per the schedule in the Athlete Guide (fee varies). Boulder Aquatic Masters hosts the swim on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:10-7:40 and does a great job.
