I guess a toe can really take a toll! We are headed out of KY with a super tired Iron Cowboy. His hammer toe loves sneaking up on him after endurance events. I guess this time it took 17 events. We lose an hour headed into Chattanooga, TN. Cheers to #17, and prayers for a good sleep and safe travels.

Yeah, even if he could go faster, the current pace is smartest. 13-15 hours is a casual jog for his abilities.

Thank you TylerJ...it was tough trying to wade through the negativity of the other thread to find anything worth reading. Hopefully he is surviving the heat this week.

Hope he survives today and tomorrow. They're posting about how sore his toe is now and "Cheers to James for.... getting started today." Sounds like there was the thought of not. These next couple of days will be intense weather wise. Good luck Cowboy.

Interesting Day 15 time of 13:23 (fastest since Day 4) comes after a few days of indoor.

Was it an easier course, better weather or the benefits of a bit of recovery from being indoors? A combination of indoor trainer miles being a bit easier and treadmill a bit softer on the body?

In one respect, I don't think it's very different to other any distance. The earlier you settle into the pace that can be sustained throughout the event, the better the chances of doing well (or in longer events, finishing).

13-15 hours is a trade-off.

Faster = more rest, recovery and sleep, more time for contingencies and less wear & tear on crew.

Slower = may be a little "softer" on the body but sacrificing recovery time, etc.

Hammer toe?

My first thought is cutting the toe box out of his running shoes. Cut from one side of the shoe to the other, straight across the upper just forward of the laces. Then cut around the front of the shoe, removing the upper forward of the laces.

Actually, probably would have been doing this after Day 2.

The swim today, in the Tennessee River, has been completed. Temps here today are expected to be 93 with very high humidity. It will be a tough day in Chattanooga but he should have a ton of support. Chattanooga has a very large triathlon following.

Day 16 Update - June 22, 2015 - From ironcowboy.com's blog:
BY DAVID WARDEN
Day 16 Splits
Swim: 1:22:21
Bike: 6:58:56
Run: 6:58:03
Total: 15:19:20
You know its a tough day when your marathon time is the same time as your 112 mile bike time. That run time includes 1.5 hours of non-moving time. Still, this is James' first 15+ hour day since Day 11. That isn't necessarily bad if he's resting longer during the day and his total recovery time in 24 hours is still 7-8 hours. I should be getting more regular weigh-ins from Sunny. She confirms that his weight pre-swim today was 163.2. The day before the project he was 168. 5 pounds lost in a given day from an IM is typical, but having that be his recovery weight is a bit concerning. I hope to get more regular weights so we can track this daily. I regret the short bog today. I actually spent some time with James on the phone covering several issues, and much of the day researching his questions. I regret I can't share all the details, but we'll give you as much information as possible.

I saw that!

Read he fell asleep on his bike and had a little crash. I am hoping he can catch up on some sleep soon, otherwise it's just gonna be tougher and tougher every day

I'm psyched. He's going to be in GA on Saturday riding the Silver Comet Trail, which coincidentally I will also be doing my long ride there at the same time. Hoping to see him out there and shout a few words of encouragement!
