If I Owned a Bike Shop, I Would Carry...

Cervelo, Trek and Bianchi.

Cervelo because they make the coolest machines out today IMO, they just keep getting better and better. Trek because they have some great prices for the budget racer and a great lineup top-to-bottom. Bianchi because they carry bikes the other don't like the Pista and Castro Valley among others.

I was just looking at the Bianchi lineup, you could essentially run a store with just their bikes. I would add felt or cervelo to round it out. Or for a family orientated store Giant.

I would carry a mixtrure of well known brands and up and coming brands. I would want to work with suppliers who were able to deliver my order on time and in full. I would want to work really closely with suppliers who were willing to help me market their product locally and offer me as much support as possible to sell their bikes and gear.

Terk, Specialized, Quantanna Roo, Giant, and GT...cause I would want to make a living. I would have access as a non-stocking dealer to Litespeed, Seven, Serotta and IF.

Of course I may take a hit on labor costs as all road bikes over $2k would need to be stripped of any and all Shimano parts and replaced with Campy, the Shimano would be sold on eBay with no reserve.

Add either Independent Fab or Co-Motion to your lineup and you've got a decent store...

Now that I know some of you guys look through the special needs bags for kicks, I'm gonna put some really weird stuff in mine. I can see it now. How about a bike shop that doesn't actually stock bikes. Could it survive?

It might, you would need eye candy though. One of each bike you sell. You have to be able to show the customer a sample of the product. These would NOT be for sale, just floor demos to be ebayed at the end of the year.

I just wish I could find an LBS near me that even carried Campy. My LBS stocks ONLY ShimaNO and ShimaNO equipped Treks. I don't know if I even want to have them work on my Campy.

No way...certainly not with the ST "I know what I want and I want it NOW, Cause I'm Mr. Tri..." crowd... Not with the "Hi, I need to get a bike for my son. He's going off to college this year." crowd either...those folks want to get this transaction done with...they've a lot more to do to get Jr. off to PeeU...and he leaves tomorrow...so forget ordering a bike for him. Nobody wants to have to order a $500 bike anyway (kind of like having to ORDER a Honda Civic...doesn't make sense...)

1) Get a Starbucks

2) Replace all the "Starbukian" decor with bike photos, posters, parts, etc.

3) Sales people would be "Bike-Sultants"

4) Order inventory as needed from wherever

5) Build up the bike

6) Mark up as "service cost"

Maybe I'm just a little too into interior design and aesthetics in general. Every bike shop I've been into seems cluttered, mainly with bikes, and I find it repulsive, as I imagine other people do, be it consciously or sub-consciously. So I figure if I owned a bike shop I couldn't handle that. If bikes had to be on hand I'd need a seperate warehouse/storage for the bikes so I could have a clean floor to showcase a single model of each bike.

Strange that you should ask. I have often said the same thing.

There is shop in Toronto, Ontario called Velotique - that sells everything for mid to high end mountain and road biking but no bikes. It's been around for years and from what I can tell does very well. However, there is no other shop in the Greater Toronto area( 4 million people) that does that, so that must say something about the model/concept.

I'm in Cleveland TN. There's a couple of shops in Chattanooga that I haven't been to that may carry Campy. I got so spoiled when I used to live just outside of Boston. I passed either by or near several shops just on my way to work everyday. I keep meaning to ask Herbert, since the Litespeed factory is in the next town.
