Iconic Gravel Tri Courses
earlier this year i announced a series of gravel races or, more precisely, an umbrella, a framework, underneath which classic races would sit. it's called: RoadOptional

i've had a steady stream of reachouts from folks who are interested in producing or recommending these events. but i'm not interested in triathlon the way it has been (since 1982). i don't care about site fees, distances, ratios, major metro areas, formulas, sponsors or, frankly, money. i'm interested in iconic courses. so, gravel meets norseman i guess you'd say. but, not that long. i'd like races that take anywhere from, say, 2hr to 4hr.

i'm also not fixed on gravel. per se. more as in here's the logical bike course, and the surface will be a mix of whatever (pavement, gravel, dirt, singletrack, truck trail, mud, sand, whatever is in the way).

the most important things: physical beauty of the place; and a course defined by the geography. so, if it's a 15mi bike and a 7mi run, fine. if it's a 40mi bike and a 4mi run, fine. swim? whatever makes sense for the swim venue, but i guess i'd err on a swim leg not overlong.

i don't think anything needs to be secret. you can PM me if you want, or you can post here. there's too much of the country (and the world) i don't know. so, who has an iconic course in his or her neighborhood? will you share it?

I have done AOMM and had friends to the ORAMM, the off road version. Not sure Lake James is swimmable, but some combo of part of the ORAMM route and toss in a swim/run would be neat.

Also I live in Raleigh, you could figure out a swim, ride, trail run using Umstead park. Plenty of gravel, single track, trails. I'd 100% do that. Especially if it was a trail run paired with the gravel ride. It's a lovely area, very central, lots of people in that area would dig an event like that.

This race no longer exists but I wish it would come back. It had an off road bike option that was pretty epic from what I'm told (I only did the road option) and the run certainly was - no one broke an hour for the 10k run the year I did it. The road bike option doesn't meet your criteria in that it had an out and back to up the distance but the off road option certainly did.

Have you seen the Blackwater Multisport Festival in November in Florida? They are offering something similar, a 1.2 mi swim, 1.5 mi trail run, 56 mi mtb and 3.75 mi trail run to finish it off.

Certainly looks interesting and I'm planning on racing it.

How about Alabama, where probably a lot of you haven't raced.

Great lake swim, mountain stream fed. A possibly epic bike ride (there's a 100 miler here but let's not do that please, it has 12000 ft. climbing) and running can be shaded on road, grass, dirt, and even in small rivers.
Great destinations to visit (from Talladega Speedway, to the second largest cave system in the country, to NASA in Huntsville).
And a great race director nearby (Team Magic, not affiliated in any way except great experience in their events).
Easy flights into Atlanta, Birmingham. Camping on site. Just avoid the camp restaurant it's absolutely horrible.

You could couple this with a swim.
