IM Israel - Race Thread
IM Israel is on its way right now. First time for the event and also the Middle East Champs so plenty of Kona slots.

Lange is through the half marathon in just about 2:30 marathon time! But still has Baekkegaard and Kalin in front.
On the womens side Ruth Astle is leading.

Yes: by minutes (will need assurance over 42.2km actual)
https://www.trirating.com/...an-distance-records/ (up to end 2021)
2:34 run this year (eg Hanson) and Lange 2:35 at Roth.

Based on the tracker, 16min to get from 36.7km to 42.2km... surely it was short?

Well only if the 36.7km timing mat was actually at 36.7km. I shall go and look for some Strava assurance.
Ruth Astle looking solid in the lead at 30km, running slightly faster than Bleymehl in second, 5 minutes down.

I think so. The IM tracker was estimating a run of 2hr33 near the end of the race, so to pick it up & go faster than that by 2-3mins seems unlikely.

Again depends on that mat. The RwGPS route suggests each lap was 13.2 miles.

….4 guys under 2:40, so probably a an “ummm…” from me.

Roth is known to be a bit short too I think (800-1km?)

Agree - we don't know - see my first post.
I note that Lange went through 21.1km in 1:16 (so 2:32 pace) and 31.6km in ~1:56 (2:34 pace).
Just how difficult is it to get the length of the run right?

Well it looks like the distance is not too off

Although he may have started the activity in T2 as the tracker time is 1'10" shorter, but any way around 41.8km

Ruth Astle wins (2:57 run), by 9! minutes (Bleymehl and Riveros #2 and #3). That's a run PB for Ruth (even if you add a couple of minutes on for the full 42.2km)
Susie Cheetham will be delighted with her sub-9 for 4th and Indie Lee hanging on to the end in 6th: her debut Ironman.

Is that an IM debut for Riveros? Does anyone know how many Kona slots there are for the pros.

8:55 on your debut is pretty darned impressive.

3m+3f Pro Kona slots but NB Lange is AQ so Chevrot gets the third slot.

I guess Embrunman is not an IM. Won AD'H too this summer.

So that Strava gives 42.0km in 2:51:43. His tracker time for the run is 2:50:34. So the actual distance is, as you say, close, less than 400m short. Lange's 2:30:32 could have 87 seconds 'added' (he averaged sub-3:37mpk) to get to 42.2km. So a 2:32! Literally outstanding and amazing.

Exactly, Salvisberg’s first 2 laps (DNFed later) also give 21.2km.
Amazing pace for Lange and quite a lot of fast splits too.

that's a great day for ruth, and nice to punch her kona ticket early. i'm a fan of hers, and it's nice to see her put it all together - sub-3 off a blazing bike. would love to see her claw back a few more minutes from the swim, but it doesn't seem to have hurt her too much against this field.

and: does anyone know anything about gregory barnaby? i confess i've never heard of him but he had a hell of a day today.

Bit of a Doubting Thomas, Maurice.
Well Chevrot (FRA) and Lange (DEU) both ran 2:36 at Tulsa. Baekkegaard (DAN) ran 2:44 there and has always threatened a great marathon, and so pleased he's at last delivered after a lack-lustre (for him) 2022. This was Barnaby's (ITA) first full distance but he has a 1:10 half (twice this year ftw) so sub-2:40 seems an entirely reasonable pace.
Sub-2:40s by European athletes to finish off an IM are common, though by no means routine. But 2:32 is a breakthrough time, and run on a pleasingly even split 1:16, 1:16. Btw, it will also push Lange to the top of the PTO run rankings (which noone ever looks at).

Lange's Strava says 41.85km in 2h31. Impressive performance for him but was lucky to get into a large group and not lose more than 20' with the top bikers. That's the only way he can win but each one plays his own cards...

Haha, I’m going with “sort of” doubting Thomas. A bit short maybe but some exceptional performances (women’s & men’s)

Jeez. I feel like we have this convention after every race.

The intermediate timing mats are frequently off. Hense why some splits are fast and then some are slow, usually one right after the other. These are still used by the rudimentary tracker in calculations for the "estimated finish," which is just that. A crude estimate.

Only the start and finish need to be accurate but based on several strava accounts, this was ~400m short. So add a minute to Lange's run which is still an IM record by far.

Here are some more datapoints:
https://insights.strava.com/pros/rpurbrook?hl=en-GB 42.4 and 100 secs more than tracker time. (Astle #1, going at 2:58 pace)
https://www.strava.com/pros/india_lee 42.2 in 3:11:21 - tracker has her @ 3:09:27 (114 secs less than Strava). (Lee #6, going at 3:10 pace)

https://www.strava.com/athletes/12262329 2:35:34 on tracker, Strava = 41.7 in a time of 2:35:44 (so maybe 4-500m short) (Barnaby #3)

As I said responding to the OP, depends on mat accuracy.
@BigboyND's estimate is congruent with mine: 400m short which at 2:34 pace is ~87 secs. So Lange's time for 42.2 would be <2:32: more than 2 minutes faster than any previous (eg Hanson in Texas '18(*), Iden in Florida, Chevrot in Tulsa).
