I would save your $$ and sign up for the Duke Blue Devil or GFT.
I signed up for Ironman Siwtzerland as my first IM distance race. I choose this race because I could get a spot in the army category where they have 75 free entries (the only requirement is that you are an actice Swiss Army 'member' and have to wear uniform except when racing). The 75 five slots were filled within 2 days.
Next year I will probably do Quelle Challenge Roth (former IM Europe) because it is cheaper than an official IM from WTC.
