IM 70.3 Santa Rosa

Anyone know if it's looking like a wetsuit swim?

Trying to decide how many swims I need to get in with the wetsuit vs the swim skin.

Thanks!

I was waiting for this.... No idea regarding water temp. But hopefully they at least have a swim this year.

And is it just me, or is that run map extremely confused with all the little clover-shaped loops over the bridges. I can't for the life of me figure it out. Hopefully everything is clearly marked.

This course looks fairly straightforward and it is cool they have only one loop now. The more confusing of the two clover-loops is the one at Fulton where the road is not closed. So westbound you have to cross from the south side of creek across the bridge north, then run under the north side creek bridge undercrossing before crossing back to the south side of Fulton and back onto the Santa Rosa Creek Trail. There is two way traffic along the bridge undercrossing path so those returning eastbound along the north side of the creek can just run under Fulton. The A St. location is a little easier, just a 180° turn to run up ramp and over A St bridge to south side before heading to the finish. While westbound runners go straight under the bridge undercrossing.

I raced this course in the inaugural year when they had two loops with one long and one shorter. That was more complicated than this 2019 course and it was marked fine. The 180° ramp turns suck for keeping momentum, but with one loop you won't have the congestion that we did on lap 2.

Water temp shouldn't be a issue, unlike last year in which they cancelled the entire swim due to fog.

The run is pretty straight forward, only issue is the path can be pretty narrow at some points making it tough/frustrating to pass people.

I realize the fog that cancelled the swim was kind of a fluke, but do you have measurements of water temp? If I recall last year the water temp was pretty borderline hovering between 76-78 degrees and it was looking like it would have been a "wetsuit optional" swim.

I'm also trying to figure out if I need to get a swimskin and squeeze in a couple practice swims with it on or not. While I don't expect AG awards, I don't want to start all the way in the back with the wetsuit wave, and I want to be off the run course before it starts heating up in late morning / early afternoon.

Do all swims with a jammer and you're covered for wetsuit, speed suit, etc.

74 posted from the past weekend. Hot week coming up but betting that even if it is a little above they'll still determine it to be "76.1"

Stony Point as well as Fulton have the same under / over crossing. But I agree it is marked well and easy enough to follow

I was actually talking about the one at the park and didn't address Stony Point vs. Fulton.

The forecast for Cloverdale (Lake locale) is 97-100 deg for today until race day with no marine layer. The only saving grace for those that would want wetsuits is the temp will drop to upper 50's lows 60's by sunrise.

Race day is also expected to be 10deg above normal day time highs (94 as opposed to 84) Be smart preparation and race day pacing

Looks like the wetsuit is probably a no-go then.

Thanks Dave!

This was probably implied by your clear sky’s comment, but was there any fog over the water when you were there? I’d hate to have another cancelled swim.

Correct No fog ... I have said many times, that fog last year was VERY rare for July. Honestly never see it like that before ... but I understand peoples concerns
