I'm ready for the IM Vintage Bike Division
Quote | Reply
Well, I've got the bike now. I raced in the 80's on an earlier version of this bike, and sold it in 89, and regretted it ever since. I found this Dave Scott Ironman a couple weeks ago, man what a trip down memory lane. It was actually donated to the local Toys-for-Tots. Since they can't use adult bikes, they sell them, to raise funds. All they ask for is a donation, and I gave them $150 for the bike, and they were plenty happy with that. Judging by the sprockets and brake pads, it might have a few test rides on it, but it's virtually new. The seat and tires are the only things not original.

So now I'm ready for when IM starts their Vintage Bicycle Division. One minute off your total time, for the age of a commercially available, non altered, pre 1990 bike. So my bike is 33 years old, so I get a 33 minute time bonus for using it in the VBD. Saddles and tires would be the only allowable non stock/era correct parts.

OK, so I made all that up, but I think it would be fun. Would I ride it in an IM for a 33 minute time bonus? Heck Yeah!

I've been training on a 53 year old bike... I just love old bikes. I actually like it better than my race bike. One of these years, I'm going to race it, just to say I did.

Love it! The bike I wanted back in '87 but couldn't afford.

Any thoughts of putting an Turbo saddle on it?

Probably not... as much as I like the idea of keeping everything stock, I also plan to ride the crap out of it, and use a favorite modern saddle. I'm also not too sure on the pedals, and may go modern there too. But then, back in the day, we used straps and rode in running shoes... and T2 took about 5-10 seconds. There is some appeal to riding in running shoes, and I doubt it will make much difference on a vintage ride.

To go truly vintage, do you need to wear a banana hammock?

Absolutely, with a midriff singlet, porn stash, and mullet. Bonus points for true cleated shoes and brake cables that look like McDonalds arches

Is fixed gear illegal for USAT? How much time penalty added on time to add Scott clip on's?

I like these rules. Cruise to a 60-minute 70.3 bike split on a penny farthing and then crush the run. I'll qualify for world's sooner than I thought!

You're proposing a world championship for the vintage bike division?

I saw this bike racing Kona in 1996. I tried looking up his results, using bib 933 or 939. The flag looks like it's a former British colony, but I can't figure out which one. I googled flags of the world but couldn't find it. It may be a former British East Indian flag, but that doesn't make sense, or would it make sense to an athlete riding barefoot on a beach cruiser in the Hawaii Ironman?

I can't find any results that have bib numbers.

I do recall on good authority that he finished. I know Cowman finished that year. I'm not sure if he switched that helmet on the bike for his horned run helmet however!

So, the athlete may remain unnamed, but he will forever be the champion of the Hawaii Ironman 1996 Retro division!

Excellent, good call and thank you!

There were 52 Hawaii residents finishing in 1996. If it was Cowman, he did an 8:32 bike split that year, which could correlate to a barefoot, beach cruiser, single speed with kick stand split!

Since I'm not good at flag spotting, I can't tell if the athlete in the photo is young or old either!

Love it. Triathletes are way too serious these days. This is a man who enjoys life. Confirms what a bunch of tosspots WTC are.

I still have a pair of 1st gen Look pedals, 1986 vintage or so.
Of course Christophe toe clips would be classy.

I purchased a similar bike from eBay. Was kinda looking for one off and on for years and finally found a good price on a near-mint model in my size. New saddle, handlebar tape, pedals, tires, cables, and brake pads. Everything else is stock Sun Tour. Fun bike to ride.

Here's my version of a "modified" vintage entry. It's been my training bike for the last 2 years, and I can ride splits on it, pretty close to my racing bike. In fact I wouldn't hesitate to race this bike anytime, anywhere. It's a $100 1967 Mondia Special. Swiss made frame. I traded my old Mt Bike for the carbon wheels. The BTS rack is an $18 Amazon find, and the aero clip-ons were a $29 Nashbar find. The 10 speed cassette/chain/shifters were the byproducts of a previous project I don't even have anymore. But... since it is full of post 1990 parts, I understand it won't qualify for the IM Vintage Bike division.

I just love the vintage bikes, mostly because I lived and raced in that era. Much simpler times, and bikes you could take apart, and completely overhaul everything by cleaning and repacking. Put it all back together with some new tires and fresh bar tape, and good to go for another 5 years.

I'm getting to the point where I'm having hard time taking all this shit serious. I have a stash fund that I was planning to use for a new bike. But for what? I'm in the 60-64 age group now, and still smoking my local age group with my old Cervelo. In Major IM events, I get my AG doors blown off (18th at Waco and 44th at IMAZ), and overall I'm in like 700th something place. So I spend $5K for a new bike, whoopeedoo I win my local age group by another minute or two, and instead of 742nd place in an IM, I come in a few minutes faster in 731st place. Whatever. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but as much fun as today's races are, the vibe it totally different. It's like going to Church, to see who has the newest car in the parking lot, the fanciest new Sunday Fashions, and the most expensive eBible.

So I think about the old days a lot. The thought of the Vintage Bike Division is lighthearted, but deep down, I'd love to see something like that. I would use my old Dave Scott bike in a heartbeat. I might even enter more IM races that I wouldn't otherwise. Now... where did I put my old Bell salad bowl?

That's a good question... and if my foggy memory is correct the Scott bars (and they weren't clip-ons, they were a full bar swap out!) came out in 87. I had a set and they were atrocious, but they worked well. I would have to say that if they were commercially available in 89 or earlier, they would still be legal in the Vintage Bike Division.

IT was 86 when the first hand bent bars started coming to us pros( I think I got the 4th pair) and then 87 when they were kind of commercially available. There were a handful of shops ordering one pair to just see what they were about, and I ordered 300 pairs. Took Boone 8 months to fill my order, and I was selling complete bar setups to shops at full retail, and they would resell for an extra $100 bucks. I had a short term monopoly there, but of course it was because I knew what was going to happen, just like with the wetsuits..

Your thread is deja vu too, I posted this one up just last year:

https://forum.slowtwitch.com/...cott%20bike#p7015438

Check out my ride, paid half of what you did!! And I believe it has original saddle, bar tape, and one of the wheels and tire. I think only one wheel is not stock, but certainly from that era..So we will be in the same division!!
