Hypothetical Olympic Tri relay
Got talking with my brother about a hypothetical relay in the Olympics.

Rules.

Each country can pick 3 athletes that are current Olympian’s.

Swimmer
Cyclist
Runner

Assume they all agree to do this and it all gets worked out. We follow Itu standards for the bike(feel free to change that rule and say we have to follow Ironman standards)

What country wins?

US wins easily. Finke/McNulty/Fisher. Not even close. Women would as well Ledecky/Dygert/Sisson.

Most teams only have 2 olympians unless you're allowed to pick former olympians in which case...

Jonny Brownlee Swim
Ali Brownlee Bike
Alex Yee Run

Can't see anyone doing better than that 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

I think Australia men would give them a run for their money... if the bike was a TT. US doesn't have anyone to match Rohan Dennis.
It'd be close for sure.

I think OP meant that a country could choose any Olympian (ie a track athlete for the run, a pool swimmer for the swim, etc) not just three triathletes to make up a team

Actually it would be an OW swimmer in most cases, remember that is an olympic event too...

would it though? the basis was ITU tri so i assume we're talking a 1500 swim. i believe the only OWS in the olympics is the 10km which is quite a different distance. you might have some interesting dynamics depending on how the water conditions turn out on the day - a fast 1500 or less pool swimmer struggling in rough water vs a relatively slow 10km OW swimmer thriving in the conditions. pool swimmers getting lost because there's no black line to follow!

i think it would be an interesting competition, open to a lot of countries unlike many of the team/relay events where to have a number of top level athletes in the same discipline limits it to big countries only

Ignoring the rules and branching out to Ironman, considering current competitors.
UK has a combined long distance (IM) time which would be difficult to match:
Lucy C-B swimming 49 (Challenge Roth 19), Ruth Astle riding 4:32 (IM Florida 20) and Katrina Matthews (IM Tulsa 21) running 2:49
Total 8:11.

how about australia in the early 2000s:
-thorpe swims
-o'grady/mcewan bikes (?)
-craig mottram runs

not a bad team, i'd think . . .
