Looks like things could get downright nasty for the west coast of Hawai'i, direct hit on Lana'i? or Maui... going to be some serious damage in places like Kona if current predictions hold true.

Iniki was the worst.
Yes they can, and they do on occasion. Not with the regularity of gulf coast areas, but it does happen.
Iniki is the most infamous of recent history (Iwa before that) - pretty catastrophic damage to Kauai. Even recently Iselle did something like $80M in damage to the big island.
The track is fairly wide right now. According to the HNL Star - the NOAA hurricane planes are out to get more data to refine the track and forecast.
