How do you determine where to line up at the swim start?
Is there a chart based on age group and pace- or just look at previous results?

I am doing a relay with friends and got put in a heat with Elites, M under 29 and Clydesdales.

As mid 40s female I don’t want to get pummeled but I also don’t want to have to pass a ton of people.

I’m guessing I will be in high 30s for time for 1.2 miles (have not been training this summer but swam a 30 last time I was training and did it. We are doing this for fun- not planning to be competitive- just supporting friends in their fitness journey).

Take a look at the course: Which way do you turn at the first buoy? If it's right, then line up well to the left sideof the start corral and aim to be about 10 feet to the left of the buoy when you get there. If you turn left, then line up to the right and aim for 10 feet to the right. After that point it shouldn't be a problem.

If you are high 30's in that group, I would fill in the back. In front of the folks that are loosely standing, but behind those that are jostling for position.

Hey Moonrocket,

Are you doing the Nautica Malibu Triathlon Long Course by any chance this Saturday?

Wait 15-30 seconds. Then start.

Thanks Everyone! I appreciate the advice. When I was training I started front and center- but even having played college water polo - that is not a good strategy based on the situation!

Based on the course map you're gonna have ~800m to the first turn. My advice is that you start at the front on an extreme edge. The left is the safest edge, the right is an option IF you're allowed to swim inside of guide buoys leading up to that first right turn.

Here's my thinking - you're a legit swimmer, you have history, you're too competent to start in the back because you'll wind up swimming up onto some folks who have panicked and gone into breast stroke: swimming into that kick can be dangerous. If you start up front and on an extreme side (meaning - no one beside you) you'll have the chaos of the scrum to one side of you and clam waters to the other. If you get edgy or bumped just inch over to the tranquil water and cruise. After 300m it'll start to string out and then you can inch over onto someone's feet and get after it.

Just wanted to say thank you! I had a great, uneventful, slow but steady swim following your advice! It may have even made me miss racing.
