Hour Record Attempt Tonight (U23 US Record)
Patton Sims is going to put his mark on the board tonight (4/9) at the Giordana Velodrome in Rock Hill.

He'll be setting the official US under 23 record (the unofficial record from a U23 rider is 47.594km but was done at altitude and without officials) and also attempting to break the Rock Hill Track record (Currently held by Ex-Cyclist - Heath Dotson - at 43.86km)

The Belmont Abbey cycling team will be streaming the attempt this evening (roughly 6:30p.m. Eastern) and I'll update this post with a link to the feed when it's live.

With 56 x 15 gearing, how fast is he planning (hoping) to pedal? 100 rpm ballpark?

I would guess 100+ rpm too.

A 700c wheel and a 25 mm tire at 100 rpm would be 47.25 kph. 102 rpm would be 48.19 kph.

I hope everything goes well. Patton is a strong cyclist/duathlete. Raced against him plenty.

Currently, the "perfect day" pace will be 48km. It's a little touch and go as to how the weather will cooperate atm.

*edit* looks very windy. He is likely going to pace down from the beginning.

I've tuned in, but how is he doing relative to the unofficial record?

Is he on pace for what he was hoping to do?

The conditions seemed to be too much for that to be possible. He's ahead of the track record at 30 minutes (and he'll set the U23 record so long as he finishes - but it's looking like roughly 44km if things stay as they are now)

That's too bad the weather isn't cooperating, but glad he's ahead of the track record!

Thanks for the update.

Appreciate the update. What's going on with the conditions? Is USAC's website incorrect in regards to Luke Mullis' distance set in 2016?

Just windy at the moment, the threat of rain pushed the start time up a bit as well.

No his distance is correct. My understanding is the u23 is a new record (and the Junior record will be separate) but don't hold me to that, that's how I understand it.

Good for him,

It’s nice to see people doing this officially, but (I mean this as a compliment) basically on what would appear a pretty tight budget.

Kudos,
Maurice

Nice work,

Curious, did he have to pay for officials and time etc or did the “community” get together and co-op/voly this?

Belmont Abbey College covered the costs and sponsored the event. Fully staffed with USAC officials and USADA. Very proud to host this event for Patton and help him on his journey.

Thanks for sharing. Great ride for the guy!

I would love a crack at what I could do in 4k or 3k at Rock Hill.

Stand start pursuit workout for tt isn’t same open road. Wish I could try track.

That is incredibly generous of the School to sponsor Patton. The costs for these type of efforts add up quickly.

you are semi local'ish aren't you?

It's a haul for me (about 4hours) but not too bad if you make a short weekend (fri evening/sat morning races) out of it occasionally.

Lots of intro classes, can even rent a bike
