Hoffman out of Kona

As per the Bahrain Endurance IG page he’s got a Grade 4 sacral stress fracture.

Gutted for him. Didn’t he do an early season IM to make sure he went into Kona fresh?

That sucks for him. I would like to do some research about stress fractures... but I'd rather hit 'watch thread' and see what ST has to say :)

Really unfortunate and sad to hear. Racing on that level means being right on the edge.

I had some si joint issues back in July during my final build to IM Canada this year. Stopped my training completely. I still raced but it was an long and ugly. Probably not the smartest idea.
From what i read and what was told by my chiro, nothing but rest seems to be the cure for it. Next time I’ll see a spine specialists versus a chiro since they’re not able to fully diagnose it

Attritional race already, and it doesn't start for 8 days. Last year we lost Tim Don late but that was an accident, can't remember other late pull outs?

They must be really pushing the boundaries as both Hoffman/Frodo are overtraining injuries...

the beginning of a sacral stress fx is frequently an acute injury, actually.

Man, I hadn't heard about Hauschildt. After her early season success, she was a Kona sleeper pick for me. I met her at TX 70.3 as she did a homestay with friends, very nice woman.

https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a20803232/are-sacral-stress-fractures-on-the-rise/

Sacral stress fractures occur more easily in people with bones weakened by osteoporosis, osteopenia, or nutrition problems, including deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D. These conditions are more common among older women, but affect other runners, too—28-year-old Ritchie, for instance, says his bone density scores were low enough to quality him as having osteopenia.
Even runners with normal bone density can disrupt the balance of stress and recovery enough to develop sacral stress fractures. Not eating enough calories in general or protein in particular robs your body of the raw materials needed to build new bone.
